The Riverhill Hotel is a comfortable hotel in a great location for Birkenhead centre and the docks. It's also very easy to find, 5 minutes drive from junction 3 of the M53.
The room itself was clean, functional and well appointed with all the usual accessories, such as hair dryer, trouserpress etc.
All rooms except one (room 8) have showers, but as I booked at short notice during Grand National week, I dipped out and was forced to enjoy a long hot soak in room 8's bath.
The complementary drinks and snacks in the room were well above the usual fare you would expect in a 3 star hotel - bottle of water, range of hot drinks, kit-kat, decent biscuits, large packet of mini-cheddars and a selection of fruit.
The staff were very friendly and the restaurant is a real gem. There is a wide choice of food and it is of a very high standard. My only slight criticism was the vegetarian options, which were on a separate menu. On the first night I had a "surf and turf", which consisted of a fillet steak, cooked perfectly and exactly as requested, topped with 3 large king prawns all drizzled with a light garlic sauce. The second night I had scallops folowed by half a roast duckling, in a black cherry sauce.
The restaurant is also popular with non-residents and seems to be used for special occasions locally. This gives it a great feel as it's constantly lively and happy. This is especially good if you're travelling alone, as you don't feel isolated. The bar has a great selection of Whiskys and a wide selection of the latest magazines to peruse.
The hotel is in a residential area, so there isn't much to do within walking distance of the hotel, but Albert Docks is only 15 minutes taxi ride away. The nearest attraction of note is the Williamson Gallery and Museum, which is only 5 minutes down the road.
