Hidden away beside the River Mersey (Is there any pub or restaurant closer to the river?), this is a locally run, friendly venue in an area that is gradually having some of its former elegance restored.
If you like good food, a wide range of real ales and somewhat quirky surroundings, this is the spot for you. A good range of food that is generally a cut above normal "pub grub" and with plenty to look at (both inside and outside).
Pay it a visit - I think you'll enjoy it!

The best place in Rock Ferry if you want a quiet drink. Staff are always pleasant, atmosphere is friendly, music not too loud. The food is superb if a tad on the pricey side (best saved for a special occasion) pool table, outside area, and views over to Liverpool. What more can you ask for? Highly recommended

Thank Christine P

We've been going to the Refreshment Rooms for about 18 months now and I've always put off writing a review for selfish reasons related to not wanting to go public on what has felt like a special and well kept secret thereby making it harder to get a table as a result!

In short if you haven't been yet you should go. We try and eat here once a week and we've ordered variously from the extremely extensive menu and never been disappointed. From pasta and burgers to great steaks and sausages from Edges Butchers in New Ferry and fish from Wards in Birkenhead Market. Steak pie and the ploughman's are amongst my personal favourites. Real ales on tap, nice drinkable wines really reasonably priced by the glass and the bottle and even Parkgate ice cream from Nichols on the menu.

In the interests of balance, the room is a bit shabby and the location is definitely interesting, we recognise it as character, but if you're looking for a fine dining experience you might be disappointed (although not with the food). What won't let you down is the people. Dave, Ian and the team front of house do an amazing job. Nothing is ever too much trouble and they get the balance between personal attentive service that isn't intrusive or overbearing just right.

On top of all that they have great fixed menu offers for special occasions like valentines/mothers day, bands on the odd Friday night and a great bistro evening every Saturday with a fancier menu cooked to the same high standard and with tablecloths and an amazing live jazz duo or trio.

So basically, go to the Refreshment Rooms - you'll be very glad you did. But please remember to tip the excellent staff - nothing this good should be free... and please leave a table for me.
