An incredible experience - I would recommend it to anyone who doesn't mind running or getting muddy.

I have vivid memories of exploring this area as a child so it was intriguing to return as an adult to see how this edgeland area has changed. The experience of being led into the Zone was reminiscent of those old fashioned childhood adventure games where your innate storytelling ability makes the everyday and mundane into something extraordinary.
At times sinister, at other hilarious, Close and Remote's rendering of the film Stalker leaves everything to the imagination.
The place itself is the star - a place that has received the rubbish of the surrounding towns since the 1930's is now a buzzing natural resource - green and full of wildlife. At the top of the hill, you can see across Wirral to Wales in one direction and across to Liverpool in the other. A great place to take kids and let them off the lead a bit.
While we were there staff from Chester Zoo were collecting vegetation to take back to feed giraffes and elephants - really! Its a secret gem.

sublime experience - took a clever social experiment / artwork to get me to experience this countryside through the narrative and promise of finding 'something'. We went as a group of strangers made to trust and share and look and listen- laying on wet mud with strangers with soft warm rain on my face was a new experience when sober....
When you're kids places become sites for adventure - a story to unfold, or the way adults cajole kids into going on long walks. It was fantastic to be part of a fantasy story.
im going back to the zone but next time with my dogs and children

The Zone is a perfect day out for visitors and locals alike. It hearkens back to a mythical time when governments embarked on harebrained utopian schemes to transform something 'bad' into something 'good', materialising our taxes as publicly accessible green spaces. Stepping off the train at Bidston is a slightly disorientating experience, but luckily we had a Visitor guide who showed us how to enter the Zone and navigate its streams, paths, marshes and monumental architectures. A must-see for local history and archaeology enthusiasts, the Zone is a landscape out of which percolate the material remains of the twentieth century. Around each bend and through each thicket, plastics, circuitry and the metal and concrete remains of industry and rail bubble up through the shifting ground, only to sink again, slowly, beneath clumps of aggressive horsetails and brambles. It's obvious that many people have walked this way before us and it's a place both haunted by a barely remembered past and hugely enjoyed now by cyclists, children and dogs. Anything is possible in the Zone and I left, to head south once more, with a renewed sense of the serendipity of place and the hopeful futureology of regeneration. Already planning next year's visit!
