“No picnics or ball games allowed!?”

Owner description: Coughton Court has been home to the Throckmorton family for 600 years, this finest of Tudor houses stands testament to a family's courage in maintaining their beliefs. From a position of high favour to one of fear and oppression post-Reformation, the Throckmortons were leaders in a dangerous age, helping to bring about Catholic emancipation in the 19th century. Explore this story of fascinating personalities through the 'family album' of portraits and Catholic treasures around the house. Coughton is still very much a family home with an intimate feel: the Throckmorton family live here, managing the stunning gardens which they have created.

“No picnics or ball games allowed!?”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 May 2014 via mobile

We arrived with 4 children, a picnic hamper and hopes of a few simple all games. We were then told that the 'owner' had decreed no ball games or picnics within the grounds from Easter 2014 onwards which frankly is ridiculous. Furthermore, we were told by NT staff that he had been patrolling the grounds berating members for picnicking. We pay a membership to the National Trust and expect to be able to enjoy the benefits of the membership. It seems unreasonable for the owner of a house which is subsidised by the NT to preclude members from enjoying a simple picnic with their 4 young children. We have visited many NT properties but would not visit this one again.

Thank you for feeding back about your visit to Coughton last weekend. Creating a welcoming and friendly environment for all our visitors, including families, is really important to us. We try to make access as informal and open as possible for everyone, but balancing this with looking after some of the more sensitive areas at Coughton, like the gardens, can be a bit of a challenge. We and the Throckmortons have taken your comments on board and we’re working together to create a new family-friendly picnic area in the grounds. We’ve ordered some brand new benches for this new picnic area and to improve the existing picnic spot near the car park. Thanks again for letting us know how your visit went and we hope you’ll come and see us again soon.

“Disappointed with the picnic policy”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 May 2014

I have always been able to have picnics within all the other National Trusts parks apart from this one. Was forced to sit on the grass surrounded by the cars with our young family. This wasn't ideal as we were quite worried about our toddler by moving traffic. Picnics should be peaceful. Gardens nice but won't be going back and would not recommend Coughton Court to other potential picnic-neers!

“Picnic in a busy car park”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 May 2014

Not sure what to say, gardens were nice, staff were nice but for some strange reason unknown to us we were forced to have our picnic on a busy car park (benches were 3 meters away from road). We were spending most of our time making sure our children were not going to go on the car park road. Stay away and go elsewhere you want to spend a pleasant picnic with your young family.

“Disappointing”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 May 2014

We drove an hour to spend this lovely day at Coughton Court. We love taking our two young children to National Trust estates for a picnic in the countryside and some fresh air. When we got there signs informed us that picnics were only allowed at the car park. We dutifully had our picnic in the car park. We had a choice of 6 badly worn benches, certainly unsafe I would say for young children, with bird poo on some of them! This was the least of our worries. Our children are lively and we had quite a job trying to keep them safe away from the cars driving past. And needless to say on a Bank Holiday there were not enough space for everyone who wanted to picnic. Lovely gardens but if you have a young family and you want a picnic and a nice day out, stay away!

“Interesting family history and nice gardens”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 May 2014

Our second visit –the first time was July 2013
Great to walk in the gardens and grounds-particularly appreciated the Bluebell Woods, the tulips in bloom and the water features
Sandwiches in the Coughton Kitchen Tearoom & Restaurant this time were a disappointment-not much choice and looked dry. Not much selection of dishes for visitor’s .Waldorf Salad sandwich tasted dry and bland. Flat Whites however & hot chocolate good .Customer service friendly and focussed. Appreciated the quality barbecued sausage on sale in barbecue tent in the grounds, Burger from there though just OK.
Throckmortons history on display was interesting though not”riveting” and friendly guides/volunteers
