“Not a dear place!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 November 2013

Before I start, let me just make one point - The Stag sits on the A46 between Stratford upon Avon and Alcester and the A46 is a very busy road. Went with the better half to visit a part of the country that we haven't been to for a long time and chose to have along weekend with The Stag as our base. Recently refurbished and with a new landlord, this is an impressive hotel owned and operated by Greene King. It isn't a particularly large hotel, only nine rooms but well appointed, decorated and furnished to a standard exceeding more expensive establishments, with everything beautifully clean. Varied evening menu, not over priced and all food cooked and presented to a very high standard - breakfast magnificent and the only hotel I have stayed in recently that manages to serve the bacon well cooked and everything that should be served hot - hot! Simon and Shirley are excellent hosts, welcoming, friendly and willing to do whatever it takes to make your stay enjoyable. Free wifi as advertised but a bit of a faff to connect to "the cloud" although good speed once connected. Only one complaint - directed at the brewery rather than the hotel - it's a Greene King house, so where was the Greene King beer? Only IPA on tap, where was the Abbot and what about IPA reserve in bottles? Fully recommend this hotel and will return sometime soon.

The superior room is to die for...

AMAZING VALUE FOR MONEY!!!
Excellent arrangement of accommodation gives you that 'home-from-home' feel. The 'cottage-style' rooms are situated separate to the restaurant/pub itself, so you can literally park your car outside and walk a few steps to your front door!!

****RECCOMMENDED*** if it's available, try and opt for room 1, it is the 'superior room' and is on 2 floors! Just like a little house! Living room downstairs with Chesterfield sofas with large LG plasma tv on the wall, great yellow mood lighting to creat that perfect Cosey atmosphere.
There is a metal spiral staircase up to the bathroom and bedroom... Incredibly comfortable, clean bed with another smaller wall hung LCD TV to match. (Built in DVD player)
Bathroom hiding an amazing roll top bath. All in all it had amazing character, and really does put you in the mood for a few days in Stratford-upon-avon.

The pub itself has a modern, 'bistro-style' feel to it, although the area and the premises are old, it has been cleverly presented to give an amazing modern atomosphere, incredibly inviting.

It's family run, great staff attentiveness.. Good wine choice, food was great and amazing value (surprisingly affordable actually, think we had 2 x 3 course meals, with drinks and a bottle of mid range rosé and it came to around £50!)....

Any 'special requests' were granted with pleasure I.e taking food/drinks back to our room etc.

Oh... And you couldn't ask for anymore from the free breakfast they put on for you!!

(Only MINOR negative, if you intend to use the DVD player in the built in bedroom TV, ensure there is a remote as you cannot operate a DVD without it. My wife fell ill one day, so I bought us a selection of DVDs for an afternoon of rest, only to (via a phone call to reception) discovered a previous guest had stolen the remote and a replacement was on order.the DVDs were redundant, I wasted £25, and had to spend the afternoon watching Dave. :/ But I'm sure this has already been rectified)

We stayed at the stag on a weekend trip out. We had an AMAZING STAY!.

The Stag is a cozy, very clean and affordable place. We paid a bit extra for the superior room, which I highly recommend, its huge. It has its own little separate living room two TV's and very clean. The service was second to none, star was extemley friendly and helpful. I would go back there again just to stay in the cozy Pub/hotel. We also ate in their Pub restaurant, it had a great menu and the Roast on Sunday was 10/10 and tasty. The breakfast was great too and made to order (included in a very good room rate)

I cannot fault anything with this place.

Room Tip: If you can book the Superior rooms - they are well worth the small extra charge - in our case £39 vs...

We stayed In room 8 which had the most comfortable bed we have ever stayed in, the room was not large but was adequate for the two of us, decorated in very good taste, and breakfast was great ...good quality produce, a cab into stratford was £13..but having stayed in the centre of town before at highly inflated prices, it was well worth every penny taking the cab in, we found the new manageress very friendly....even given us a tour of the historic court room, which is now used as a function room...we are already planning our next trip to the Stag and would recommend it to other friends should they wish to join us !

Room Tip: All rooms are great....worth getting the superior double room

Was given a warm welcome when we arrived, but after going to our room which was across a courtyard we found it had not been cleaned properly, we were given another one which was a bit cleaner but was totally impractical having a metal spiral staircase up to the bedroom and bathroom, this was in the eaves of the roof which you could only stand up in the middle of the room, also there were 2 beams across the room which you had to duck under. There was no shower but a bath which was tucked into the eaves and you could not stand up in without banging your head.
Although the building had loads of age and character being in our sixties we found it very awkward.
We had dinner at the hotel and we had a very long wait for the food to arrive although there was not many people in, the breaded mushrooms were rock hard and you could not cut them, also the chicken was overcooked.
Breakfast was very nice, but coffee was one small cup, I had to get up twice to go and ask for refills, the service was poor, with no one coming to see if we, wanted anything.
After staying at many Old English inns this was by far the worst.
We would not recommend this hotel !

We went to this hotel this weekend and were very suprised when we opened the door to our room which was situated not in the pub but in a seperate courtyard . We had asked for a travel cot and they had forgotten to put this in but asked for a member of staff from another hotel to bring one along . The room was small but very nicely decorated , and spotless , with a great modern bathroom with extra wide shower and nice bath . Lots of tea and coffee on hand in the room but also the courtyard wasnt far if we needed anything else . We had free Wifi and newspapers too . In the morning we had a great breakfast with lots of choice and they even made me another breakfast when my toddler knocked over a drink on to my food . Stratford isnt far away and I think this hotel / pub is well worth the little drive out . The only negative is they perhaps needed more staff and for the Manager to crack a smile , but then we was doing everything for everyone : ) . Highly recommended ****

Room Tip: The rooms away from the main pub seem best , not like a hotel room at all but your own little chalet...

Went to the Stag and had a lovely time. There is a new menu and there is lots to choose from. The service was excellent, all was good apart from a family with 2 very unruly children who were verbally abusive to the manageress... Some people eh!! We moved tables, had a bottle of wine and 2 lovely steaks! I will be returning whe in the area.

Room Tip: Did not stay but I was sown around, and he rooms look lush!
