“Beautiful spot to stay”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 September 2013 via mobile

Found in the quietest place in the world in MERE, some miles for Warmister, it's a beautiful old English pub and looks just like it pictures, with the nicest of hosts, the whole place is really well appointed, bedroom very spacious, and bathroom lovely, all , breakfast was great and as it's a pub dinner was also spectacular, so don't need to go find any food. I would highly recommend this property to stay a while in MERE.

We stayed in the Sycamore room and it was lovely! Great attention to detail. Beautiful en suite. Staff were really friendly. Could not fault it. We ate in the restaurant and had a really good value meal. Breakfast was really good. A great place to stay.

We used this as a base (2 night mid-week stay) to take our 2 1/2 year old daughter to Longleat. The staff couldn't do enough for us, they were courteous and friendly. The room was beautifully decorated, and extremely clean. The food was excellent and reasonably priced. They accommodated our request for Vegetarian breakfast (veggie sausage) at extremely short notice (about 10mins!).
Overall a lovely experience that made a spur of the moment break all the more enjoyable!

Highly recommended!

This was a birthday treat for my girlfriend who was on holiday in Somerset. We wanted to be near to Center Parcs so I could take her to a spa day and near to my her holiday accommodation. Upon arrival we were shown by a pleasant member of staff to our room which was called Walnut. The room was very nicely decorated, large in size and very nice bathroom. It was also nice and airy on a hot summers day which was very pleasant. We ate in the restaurant that evening and the food and service was brilliant. Bed was very comfy although traffic was a bit noisy early morning but bareable. We had a nice lazy breakfast where food was cooked to order. Nice service from the young girl who was looking after us and my vegetarian girlfriend was well catered for. Overall a really nice and relaxing stay, great accommodation, great staff and great food. Don't be put off by the previous review as that was clearly a one off and the staff did everything they could to rectify and compensate for the situation.

Positives = friendly staff (who attempt to take ownership when issues arise) and comfy bed in Sycamore room.

Negatives =
1. We arrived 30th June (as planned and confirmed via email by owner Samantha), to be told by manageress "oh, we were expecting you yesterday"! No problem, she thought the owner had made an error so had rejigged the rooms to ensure we stayed in Sycamore for our 3 nights.
2. Shelf over sink in bathroom wasn't secured to wall and (fortunately only plastic and not glass) containers we'd put on it fell into the sink. Several cobwebs on bathroom ceiling, dirty tissue in bedside cabinet and only crumbs left in biscuit pot. Manageress apologised and assured us the 'handyman' would fix the shelf on day 2, she cleared away the cobwebs herself.
3. Ordered 2 main meals from bar menu on first night, only to find after 3 mouthfuls that the BBQ chicken melt was raw!!! This could have proven extremely nasty. Manageress apologised profusely and provided full refund for both meals, also sent one of the kitchen team out to apologise and offer explanation. The explanation he provided was "there was mis-communication in the kitchen, sorry". We accepted this, but was unsure what he meant. Manageress brought refund over and asked if he'd spoken with us and was surprised to learn what he'd said. She explained that for reasons only known to them, the chefs had decided to change how they cooked the chicken prior/after to BBQ topping being added, but didn't speak to each other about it, hence, raw meat sent out on plate to me. Manageress confirmed that due to the 'issues' we'd encountered having been there only 2 hours, that a full refund for our 1st night accommodation would be given.
4. After decent night sleep in the comfy bed, my wife used the shower first on our first morning, only to find that the water was cold. Spoke to family staying in next room and they confirmed that the water in their room was also cold. The book in room states that the bathroom is equipped with "an exhilarating power shower" - I didn't realise this meant stone cold!!
5. Arrived for breakfast (this is a poor offering, just 3 choices of cereals and yoghurts left on side - not even in a bowl of ice - followed by whatever you choose from the menu). I asked to speak to someone in charge to discuss the cold water issue, only to be met by Adam the head chef. He apologised and confirmed that we would not be charged for any part of our 3 night stay here and that an engineer had been called to rectify the situation. He also said a refund of £75 (our deposit paid in advance for night 1, would be refunded, but he couldn't do this as he didn't work the tills)
6. Having been put off by the lack in ability to cook chicken on night 1, my wife and I ordered toast from the kitchen and once we'd finished this, we were finally introduced to Mark the owner, who again apologised for the 'issues' we'd been faced with since arriving. A refund of £75 was put onto our credit card by him and he offered us a complimentary meal in the bar that night. No thanks, we don't want to eat anything here after the near-miss from the raw chicken incident.
We returned to our room after breakfast and the water coming from the taps was now warmer than first thing, so off we went to Longleat (the whole reason for travelling 4 hours from home to this part of Wiltshire).
7. Arrived back at Walnut Tree early evening on day 2 and turned on taps in room... STONE COLD water from hot tap, but on a positive note, the room had been cleaned properly, bathroom shelf fixed and full pot of biscuits awaited us! So back down to speak to Isabelle in bar, who handed over a pre typed note from Mark & Samantha advising that they knew of problem with boiler and offered to move us to alternative accommodation for our (at our request) last night in Mere. We accepted and packed up our belongings in order to move to The George Inn (in centre of the town). This wasn't great as it's very outdated, with old fashioned rooms (see our review on that place). It certainly wasn't a 'like-for-like' move from the 4* Walnut Tree and reduced our 3 night stay in Mere to a 2 night stay. Hardly worth the 7 hour round trip.

Having booked this accommodation 3 months in advance based on Trip Advisor reviews, I can say with confidence that this is the most disappointing place that myself and my wife have stayed in. I accept that Mark did his best to resolve the situation however, from a customers' point of view (& pardon the pun), our experience has left a very bad taste in the mouth.

Room Tip: some road noise from 6.30am - 9.00am in Sycamore, as it's on front of pub and next to road. But...

Dear Mr John Boy Hollywood, thanks for taking the considerable time it must have taken you to write your recent review, your level of detail is invaluable when sitting down with the team to understand where we went wrong. We pride ourselves on our levels of service and guest satisfaction as readers of our reviews both for hotel and restaurant will be able to see for themselves. It is therefore always personally disappointing for us as owners on the very rare occasion when we don't deliver as we and our guests would hope.

It is for that reason that we didn't charge a penny for your stay whilst in Mere, including paying for your food and accommodation at The George and I'm so sorry that you still weren't happy with the alternative. We also offered the same courtesy to the other two rooms staying that night but neither of them would take up the offer, understanding that a major failure of our hot water system was just bad luck and most unfortunate to happen on a week-end when engineers and parts are hard to come by.

Fortunately a day and £1200 later we now have a fully functioning system again, just a day before we received an AA inspection which was highly commendable on all aspects of the business and rewarded us with our 4 star rating once more.

Many thanks again for taking the time to give us your considered opinion.

Any hotel could take a lesson in customer relations from this hotel. Me, my partner and child arrived after a long day of travelling and touring Longleat and were met with a potentially traumatic revelation that the room had been double booked. Mistakes happen every day, but it's how people react to these mistakes that makes the difference. The person responsible came out, held her hands up and said 'sorry, it was my fault', which is so rare. You expect the cock and bull story, but not here. The manager then took over, apologised, offered to pay for our meal, drinks and stay in a nearby hotel that he arranged there and then.

We decided to stay at the Walnut for our meal, and we were massively rewarded in doing so; everything appeared home cooked (not as one review suggests) and was delicious. All of the staff were polite and helpful.

On the second night, when we returned to the hotel and was able to stay in the room, it was excellent. The room itself was spotlessly clean, immaculately well finished and very large for all three of us.

Overall our perception of the hotel was excellent and happily recommend the place to all and sundry. The only downside we could find was the location. Whilst 15-20 minutes from Longleat (unless we took a wrong turn), there is nothing really anywhere near Mere, and this is the biggest shame for such a lovely B&B.
