Just spent four nights at Widbrook Grange Hotel, 4thJuly – 9th July 2011.
I’ll start off with the negatives, but please read on.
Originally booked this place because my wife loves all things Georgian/Victorian etc, when we arrived it couldn’t have been more perfect, until we were shown out of the house and into what can only be described as a “Chalet”.
These “Chalets” surround the house, ours backed on to the indoor pool, the decor looked a little tired/worn, there were very little storage cupboards/drawers so we lived out of our suitcases for the four days, the bathroom/toilet was smaller than we have at home and the one at home is quite small, our daughter had to sleep on what can only be described as a fold out camp bed, the worse thing were the thicknesses of the walls and ceilings, we could easily hear the people walking and coughing above us.
Widbrooke Grange is classed as a three star, Id give the “Chalet” a two star max.
On the other hand, the main house was definitely up to scratch, there were two sitting rooms, both decorated to a good standard, not sure what the standard of the bedrooms were though, the dining room was also well decorated, the house I’d class as a four star (not three).
We also had an evening meal at the hotel, the food was outstanding, I would give a rating of four to five stars for the food.
For those planning on staying here and hoping to stay in the house my advice would be to have this confirmed before parting with a deposit.

Room Tip: For those planning on staying here and hoping to stay in the house my advice would be to have this c...

We stayed at the Widbrook Grange Hotel during the first weekend of July to celebrate a family birthday coupled with a visit to Longleat. There were nine of us all together and the whole party enjoyed themselves and had a great time. The hotel staff were most obliging and accommodated our large party with humour and excellent service in the dinning room. We all thought that the kitchen staff excelled themselves as the food was delicious. A really good place to stay and we hope to return in the future.

I stayed with my husband and my two daugthers a couple of weeks ago. We had a very warm wellcome.
The building and garden are beautiful as well as the surrounding countriside. The rooms are big and very clean and the beds very comfortable. We really enjoyed our stay in this hotel and hope to be back soon.

I planned a special birthday trip to widbrook to celebrate with family.having read the latest review with some dismay i was pleasantly surprised when we arrived to see a pretty old house in a lovely garden. overall our rooms were fine a little shabby and old fashioned maybe but clean with very good bedlinen and towels. however my sons room which was supposed to be a family room was rather cramped with 2 travel cots. unfortunatley the travel cots were totally unacceptable being both dirty and broken.Chris the manager did change one but said didnt have another and wouldnt accept that they should not have been on offer. The rest of the weekend was releative trouble free. Dinner was laid in the private room although I had asked for atable in the dining room which was on my confirmation letter. and the menu was definately a winter one although we were there in July.Chris,s explaination was that they were openning a new briistro and the chef couldnt do a summer menu and plan one for nthe new bistro ! However the meal was pleasant and breakfast was very good and the staff were delightful.

We appreciate this guest's positive comments on the pretty location of our hotel and that our rooms were fine, clean and with good bed linen and towels. We would point our however that the room mentioned was not booked as a family room and was not a family room. It was a double room in which the guest asked us to put a couple of cots, a service for which we do not charge.

We accept that one of the cots had a stain on it and we missed this when we put the cot in the room. This cot was changed immediately when the guest informed us about the stain. As far as we could see the other cot was fine which is why we did not change it and none of the cots were broken. (we did have a bit of trouble putting one up but when we got it to click into postion it was fine)

Because of the size of this group we offered them, at the time of booking, our private dining room at no extra charge, a guesture that they were pleased with and initially accepted. We assumed wrongly that this is what they continued to want but when they arrived we did offer to relay their table in the restaurant if this is what they preferred. They said that they were OK using the Private Dining facility.

I am pleased that the group enjoyed the food. Our current menu whilst having some dishes more in line with winter/spring also offers many other choices that are enjoyable during all seasons. As our Manager said we are just in the process of changing the menu for when we open our new Brasserie and guests will be able to enjoy the best of French Regional food in addition to our traditional "English Home Comforts" dishes.

Great hotel. Nice rooms and restaurant with good food. Very friendly staff and acommodated the use of a wheelchair user customer. Great little pool with very nice decor. Good location for Bath, Longleat, Bristol etc. Would definately return to stay. Old cottage, courtyard style country hotel with charm.

Discreet & affable staff who appear to enjoy working here. The double room was spacious , clean & with good views over the garden. Bradford on Avon is an attractive town in its own right. But the Hotel location is excellent, with the many attractions of this area easily reached from here. We loved the pool, but best of all here is the food. It really is superb.
What didn't we like? The smell from the lillies, in a vase by the front door when we arrived. How picky is that? This is a great Hotel to stay in.

Room Tip: Our room was the George Elliott.

We were looking for a weekend away to chill and relax, and have some treatments. The web site states that they believe in pampering every guest and have two resident beauty therapists, offering a range of treatments. This is simply untrue. They have one person, who is not resident and has to arrange child care before she can consider whether or not you can be accomodated. In the end, the schedule was so restrictive that we didn't have anything. The swimming pool is quite pleasant, but had young children in it for 3 hours on Friday afternoon for local swimming lessons, which wasnt advertised anywhere and when we discussed it, the hotel management simply said 'oh, they must have increased their sessions', as if they didnt even know who was hiring their pool. The gym has about 6 bits of equipment with a sign up saying some were broken, and the changing rooms are reminiscent of an old school hall. The food in the restaurant was of good quality (apart from the poached eggs, which were simply awful - hard as and looked like acorns) but the ambience lacks something. Ultimately, this hotel is overpriced, and oversold in our opinion.

We have recently been informed by Trip Advisor that we have been rated as excellant by 80 travellors and in May 2011 Trip Advisor awarded us a certificate of excellance. We are really sorry that this guest did not have the experience that they had hoped for.

There are one or two comments in the review that are not quite accurate and I would like to give prospective guests the correct information.

First of all we offer exactly what is says on our website and in our literature in that we do have two Therapists working for us. their names being Germaine and Francis. Each can be booked by name and they have different speciality treatments on offer. I don't know why this guest thought that we only have one Therapist.

Both Therapists are available for appointments over a 12 hour period each day, seven days a week. Both ladies are kept very busy and for that reason to avoid dissapointment we suggest that our guests book their appointments in advance.

The guest talked with Germaine to book an appointment but unfortunately Germaine was committed to a couple of hours of some essential personal activity at home at that time. In an effort however to be helpful Germain did say to the guest that if she could get a child minder she would gladly undertake the appontment. This is not a case of the guest's needs taking second place to those of our Therapist's, indeed on the contrary Germaine did her best to satisfy the guest's needs.

Our guest however did book an appointment with Germaine at a time that presumably she was happy with and therefore her comment about the schedule being restrictive is not quite correct. If she was not happy with the time we could always have organised an appointment with Francis. What happened however is that after the guest had been at the hotel for a couple of days she cancelled the appointment with Gernaine for the following day saying that she needed to leave the hotel earlier than planned. This is why did not not have a treatment not because the times offered were restrictive.

Its nice of the guest to say how pleaseant the swimming pool is and it is a shame that she did not want to use the pool whilst there were children in it.

I had agreed with a local school for handicap children that, as a one off, they could bring a small group of children for a swim as a bit of a treat. As it was a one off and for only a couple of hours I omitted to tell our receptionist. This why she did not know about the group.

What I did do however was to rope off half the pool over its entire length and reserve this half for the use of hotel guests whilst the children were in the pool. When the guest complained about there being children in the pool she acknowledged that half the pool was roped off and empty but said that she did not want to go in the pool whilst the children were in it. About an hour later when the children had left the guest went into the pool and had exclusive use of it .

We think it only right that all users of our pool irrespective of age or gender should have the same opportunity to use the pool and over the weekend, as the hotel was full, the pool was busy with both adults and children enjoying the facility together.

The gym has 10 pieces of equiptment in it giving the opportunity for our guests to have a good workout and exercise all muscle groups. None of the equiptment was broken as the repair needed on only one of the pieces had been completed the day before the guest arrived. We had just forgotten to take down the coutesy notice informing our guests that we were waiting for an engineer to attend to repalir that piece of equiptment. All our equiptment is serviced in line with manufacturers recommendations and it is all inspected and certified for use once a year. We have three changing rooms, one for men, one for ladies and one for disabled guests. They are all cosy and warm with showers, toilet facilities and independent heating.

I am pleased that the quest enjoyed our food, we do have an AA Rossette and under the direction of our Head Chef Phil Carrol, who was trained in classic French cooking at Langhams London, we are about to open our new Anglo French"Widbrook Brassserie" offering the best of French regional dishes and rustic British food.
