“The sort of welcome we all hope for”
Reviewed 4 January 2014

This was an out of season visit by my wife and I to Bath and the surrounding countryside. Our visit was enhanced by the welcoming attitude of the proprietors and their excellent staff. The cuisine was very good . Our room was little short of enormous. Two tiny niggles- the shower was one of those never satisfactory electric things- and we really missed having good coffee. An espresso machine would solve this. We will certainly be returning to this very comfortable hotel if only to experience the contagious bonhomie of the proprietor!

It's not always easy to find a nice hotel that's happy to take your four legged friend as well, so we were delighted to find that Wildbrook Grange accepted dogs (for a £10 supplement). We had a lovely evening - with restaurant menu as room service - as dogs aren't allowed in the main hotel or restaurant. The staff are really friendly and went out of their way to make sure we had all we needed and suggested some nice walks with the dog the next morning. A little on the expensive side, hence the 4 rating, but would definitely recommend.

Room Tip: Dogs are only allowed in the courtyard rooms I think.

Visiting family in the area we were pleased with the facilities and the excellent food prepared at the Widbrook Grange. From breakfast to a wonderful dinner with family we were impressed. The staff were great and allowed us to use one of the sitting rooms to catch up in a very comfortable setting.

Our family's (2 adults, 2 children, 11 & 7) one-night visit was a delight from start to finish. As many other reviewers have noted, the reception and all staff were friendly and helpful throughout. Three particularly notable events: our room radiators were luke-warm - the manager immediately went to our rooms and adjusted the thermostats; the children were served tea in the specially laid out conservatory by a young, friendly and very efficient waitress; at breakfast the children were asked if they'd like hot chocolate, which came in individual two-cup sized teapots. Kiddie bliss.
The family suite has two adjacent rooms, each en-suite, connected by a short corridor with an outside door. Tea, coffee and water were provided. The rooms and bathrooms were comfortable and clean - there was no trace whatsoever of mould, damp or unpleasant odour as has previously been noted.
Dinner, both for the children and adults, was excellent. The children had a good choice of freshly prepared meals with fresh ingredients for all three courses (each course was priced but was all included in the DBB price - the only extras we paid for were all drinks - unlike many DBB deals which either just give you an allowance or offer a restricted dinner menu with a la carte extra - an invidious practice, often unadvertised.) Dinner in the brasserie was innovative and masterful, particularly the winter spiced beef, the confit of duck leg and seared breast, the ballotine of turkey and the sticky toffee tart (It was a winter night after all). There are less meaty dishes available. Beware though, portions are very generous. I would suggest you check the menu to see the full glorious ingredients and description of these meals. A bottle of Pouilly Fume was very competitively priced and served just right.
As the review guidance does ask for what was liked least I must just point out two deficiencies - the swimming pool surround and changing rooms do need some care and attention and there was no cognac, Armagnac or calvados on the digestif carte.
However, I have no hesitation in fully recommending this hotel and we would certainly return.

Room Tip: The family suite (Room 12) is perfect.

Set a little outside of the town, and a short drive away from Bath, the hotel benefits from being quiet and restful. Friendly, helpful staff compliment very good food. Only an overnight stay for us, but it would have been great to have stayed longer.......

Following a stressful month, my husband thought that I needed a break and booked the Widbrook Grange for three nights. He chose the hotel because of the telephone call he had with Chris who was very helpful. On arrival we were made extremely welcome and given a choice of rooms. We chose the Christina Rossetti room, which was cute and spotless. Shower could have been more powerful, but the plumbing went with the age of the building. The hotel is characterful and charming. Breakfast had thoughtful touches such as a muesli bar and the scrambled eggs were delicious. We ate out on 2 nights, but had dinner in the hotel one night and the menu had quite a few vege options and was very pleasant and reasonably priced. The suggestion from Claire to go into Bath by train was very welcome the journey was only 12 minutes. Even in Winter, Bradford has some lovely walking (suggest the walk to the Aquaduct). The craft shops by the Tithe barn are also worth a visit and Bath was even better than usual with the addition of the Christmas Market. Returned home in much better mental health thanks to the Widbrook Grange hospitality. Should mention that the gym is a bit run down so don't expect too much and if you want to swim, suggest you do so outside of the swimming lesson times which are posted on the wall.

Room Tip: Rooms are either in the converted stables, separated from the hotel where the lounges are, or in the...

We decided to hold a business event here along with an early Xmas do. The hotel is an old 18th century farmhouse, with some rooms in the farmhouse and others in the converted stables. We were welcomed warmly and everything was shown to us so that we could ensure that everything was OK. My wife and I had chosen a special menu for our meal on the first night (before the rest of the party arrived). This was a "Fur and feathers" game menu, consisting of 4 courses of game, pudding and coffee and macaroons. This was excellent, as was breakfast the next day. The meeting room was well set up and apart from a group of very dozy flies in the attached conservatory, we had no issues with the meeting. Lunch was any choice from the standard menu and was excellent. Evening meal was served in a private room just for us, again from the standard menu. Wine choice is limited but excellent and priced competitively. Breakfast the next day was not quite as good - the hotel was full, and think that the chef may have been struggling to deal with the volume of orders. bacon was overcooked; one person's kipper was still cold in the middle. However, a nice place; great staff and overall, the food was excellent.
