“A small mill well worth a visit”
Reviewed 1 June 2014

As you head for Hardwick Hall take time to stop off and visit the little Stainsby Mill (a National Trust property). Check opening times because it's not always open. The enthusiastic volunteers will give you a brief guided tour explaining the mill machinery - renewed in the 1800s. Somewhat unusually it has a water wheel powered not by a stream or river, but by water drawn from a series of man-made ponds

“Victorian Ingenuity at its best”
Reviewed 30 May 2014

A mill on this site since the 13th century, with the present mill built in 1849-50 before a full refurbishment in 1990.One of the very few bucket wheel mills around and well worth a visit on your way to nearby Hardwick Hall.
The mill is fairly small, with steep stair access to the upper floor, and has several quite unique features with the guides managing to pass on their own enthusiasm for the then state of the art engineering involved, and also the part that the miller played in the life of the community.
An interesting place to visit, but try and go on a Thursday when they are usually 'milling' and you can purchase some of their own flour as a memento.

“Interesting and educational”
Reviewed 29 May 2014

It is well worth visiting the mill on your way to Hardwick Hall. Friendly staff give a guided tour of this tiny mill and explain how it worked. On some days they are milling flour, so it would be worth checking this. It made for an interesting and educational visit. Their own flour is available to purchase.

“An interesting way to spend a few hours”

An informative place to visit. It gives you a real flavour of what milling involved hundreds of years ago.
