“Good value for money in Chesterfield”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 December 2013

We needed to stay over at Chesterfield on the way up to Harrogate recently and the Portland was an hotel we had encountered some years ago.

Things have changed and it's a Wetherspoons now with a busy pub below serving excellent value for money food and drink - we enjoyed a 'two meals for £6.99' deal; you really can't go wrong.

Staff in all areas were friendly and helpful.

Our room was very spacious above the pub area below, decent sized TV and a large bathroom - the latter does need a little updating including a re-enamel to the bath and grouting to the tiling to bring it up to a better standard.

One word of warning with a front facing room the closing time outside the pub does make it very noisy indeed, so a rear facing room would help in preventing your 'beauty sleep' being disturbed.

In the morning we ventured downstairs for breakfast and there were already one or two visitors enjoying an 07.00hrs. early morning alcoholic drink - our breakfast was simple, tasty and again very good value for money.

All-in-all for what this establishment was it was difficult to fault in terms of excellent value for money, friendly service and just a few minor niggles and quibbles to consider for the future; but if you need a decent room for the night in Chesterfield and good value for money food and drink, then you cannot go wrong with The Portland Hotel.

Room Tip: Try and avoid rooms at the front of the hotel if you don't wish to be woken up when the pub clos...

We stayed at the Portland for a theatre break to see a play at the Pomegranate theatre which is only 1/4 mile walk across town from this lodge. The room was clean and had all we needed and even a trouser press which we didn't. The staff were helpful and the food was up to Wetherspoon standards with a good selection of drinks too. The bar gets very busy on market days so we went round the corner to another Wetherspoons pub for lunch. The small car park at the rear gets full early but a guest pass system seems to work keeping casual town centre drivers out.

Room Tip: Rooms on the front are only noisy after 6am when the market traders start setting up. The rear of th...

Myself and my husband along with my 2yr old and 3 month old stayed recently. The staff were very helpful and professional. The family room was clean and very spacious, the staff had phoned ahead and asked if we required a travel cot, in my experience this can be hit and miss on the cleanliness side, but the cot was spotless and lovely clean bedding was provided too. Wanted to stay an extra night! Great value and location and i didnt hear any excess noise considering it is on top of a wetherspoons.

We stayed one night here. Arriving about 5pm on a Friday eve, there were several places in the car park, so no problem. Very polite & efficient check-in and out. Our double room at the front with a bay window was large, spotlessly clean & with a good hospitality tray including 2 bottles of water, 2 packs of biscuits plus the normal coffee & tea. It was a bit hot when we arrived, but we turned off the radiator & opened the window so it quickly cooled down. It was not noisy, but we were aware of people leaving the pub late in the evening & vans arriving in the morning for the market. The bed was very comfortable & we slept well. Bathroom was fine. This is a hotel with no frills, and excellent value for money. Two suggestions - the room could do with a couple of chairs in the bay window, and table/stands for suitcases so you don't have to grovel on the floor which is not easy if you have a bad back! Normal Wetherspoons food, so you know what you're going to get on the menu before you arrive - again, good value.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the back if you are worried about noise.

We are just back from a lovely weekend at the Portland Hotel. The location is excellent, the food and drink are good and very reasonably priced, our room was large with heating that we controlled. The weather was unfortunately very inclement, but it only rained outside.
The staff were very friendly, attentive and efficient.
If we ever stay in the area again we would certainly go back to this hotel. Excellent value for money.

I stayed for two nights and the hotel was easy to find, good parking, good location, spacious comfortable room, very comfy bed. Helpful staff. Pub downstairs was handy but not noisy at all. Maybe a little shabby in places and my sink was dirty but they came straight away to clean it and gave me a free breakfast to apologise. Good value for money. I felt relaxed and comfortable here.

This was my first time in a Wetherspoons hotel and I would visit again. The room was a good size, there were two nice windows looking out over Chesterfield. Everything was clean and tidy. The hotel is very central, but wasn't noisy at night. The price was good, it didn't include any food but the breakfast was fine (nothing special though). The only problem is the small car park (if you arrive late there is no space).
