“Dreadful - avoid”
Reviewed 6 August 2010

Our group of 7 ended up in this cafe for lunch largely due to the fact that our elderly relative couldn't walk any further and none of us will bother going back there again. The most miserable woman at the ordering counter possessed no manners whatsoever - not even a smile or thanks. If it was possible to put less than 1 star for the rating I would. Half the items we ordered they had run out of and they completely forgot one of our party's meal - we had all but finished by the time theirs arrived. The food we did get was not up to much either. Don't waste your money.

“I felt bitterly disapointed with this...”
Reviewed 30 July 2010

I felt bitterly disapointed with this place, we arrived into a dead coffee shop ordered our starters we waited nearly 35 mins for, when we got them it was cold and very obviously just frozen food and at nearly £6 a starter I expected more than just frozen pate and duck parcels! The main meals aren't cheap either 10.95 for fish and chips which was dry small and over cooked the homemade chips which were advertised were actually frozen FRIES! The staff looked stressed, tired and annoyed at one certain woman who seems to be really rude to the other staff I can only assume she was boss/manageress! the place looks nice but once you sit down and look at things properly the floor seats walls and even our cups were disgusting with food stuck to seats and the toilet looked unmopped with toilet paper all over the floor! I was so disapointed I really enjoyed bakewell but this place ruined my day completly!

“Just spent the best part of an afternoon...”
Reviewed 29 May 2010

Just spent the best part of an afternoon having lunch here. Food took over an hour to arrive with no apology for the delay. Kids meal arrived last. Mash was lumpy, gravy was cold. Baked potatoes were burnt and salty. Avoid if you can.

“Maybe a bad day or just lunchtime?”
Reviewed 31 January 2010

Having read the review previously.. Can hardly believe it was the same place.
Downstairs eating area was grubby and the seats were dirty although upstairs, which wasn't open was much smarter..
Having gone in for a quick lunch and ordered, we got our drinks but then waited 35 minutes for our meal...unusual for us to wait that long but we were hungry!. The waitress was pleasant. but seemed harrassed... meal when it came was dreadful; lasagne orderd by me was microwaved to a rock solid mess with a removeable solid cheese topping... the chunky chips were actually overdone french fries. My friends meal was scampi.. or at least small burnt bullets.... french fries and not chunky chips..and a burnt lemon wedge!
The whole meal was totally inedibleand hungry as we were, we were not going to even attempt to eat it, we said we would pay for our drinks and leave. The waitress did not seem surprised at all and we actually paid nothing. the copule at the table behind us said their meal had been equally bad , they too were disgusted. This place is not cheap and we did expect much better. very very disappointing

“Pleasant surroundings, good atmosphere, great food, excellent service”
Reviewed 29 September 2009

This restaurant is open all day and is very popular. At night it takes on a different feel and has a great atmosphere.
Recently refurbished and extended, it has a wine bar on the first floor with two outside terraced seating areas. You can eat in any part of the restaurant/wine bar.
The main restaurant which is on the ground floor has a large window overlooking the street which adds to the atmosphere and enjoyment.
The menu is quite varied but on this occasion we chose from the set menu of main course and a glass of wine for £9.95 and the food was great. The steak was cooked perfectly, the chunky chips were crisp and the wine very palatable. We were served olives, balsamic vinegar and oil with bread as an appetiser at no extra cost and had soup at an additional cost which was delicious.
Helen the owner overseas the bar and restaurant and she and her staff are very attentive.
