“Lovely restaurant, beautiful bar, wonderful views”
Reviewed 11 October 2013

Hassop Hall has a lovely aspect and is known locally as one of the most attractive hotels in this part of Derbyshire. The bar is beautifully painted with coats of arms, snug to return to on a crisp winter's evenng. Our room had a lovely view through a round window over the garden and the hills. The fittings are not the most modern but the location is light and sheltered and tranquil. It is obvious from arrival on that this is a country house adapted to become an hotel so that the floors are a bit uneven and the lift seems to be in an odd place. but the ambience is lovely. We could never find anyone to serve us but this is missing the point of the place. The area is stunning and some of Derbyshire's finest attractions are right on the doorstep. We were cosy here and didn't want to go home.

Room Tip: Not sure where the best rooms are. I liked our view over the gardens at the back.

We were the hosts of our wedding and the venue was perfect. We arrived at Hassop Hall on Thursday 3rd October to be married the following day. We had a buffet supper that was priced at £25.99 per person. This was money well spent and good value for money. We had cooked ham, a wide selection of cheeses along with a variety of salads and crusty rolls. The portions were very generous and all our guests did go back for second helpings. There was ample choice of deserts and I'm sure that Helen and her team would of taken all guests dietary requirements seriously. I'm sure that if there was any guests with allergies then Hassop Hall would of only been more than accommodating with any of our guests requests. All they had to do is ASK!

The wine menu was extensive and beers were available both bottled or by draught. Knowing how fickle the hospitality industry can be, it does seem somewhat that a minor thing can be blown out of context and if only such matters had been raised with Helen and her team I'm sure that any matters would have been dealt with efficiently.

We booked a super room that had a four poster bed. I only wish I had taken pictures to show how clean and tidy the room actually was. What did impress me was the choice in toiletries as they were Molton Brown and we felt this was a nice touch.

The views were breathtaking along with the beautiful grounds in and around the main house. Hassop Hall is a very charming period building and what's important to us is that the owners have maintained its character and essence of what a period building should look like.

Overall throughout our stay we had 100+ guests descend on Hassop Hall and as the organisers of the wedding we feel that we could not of chosen a more suitable venue to host our wedding. We will certainly be returning in the very near future.

Room Tip: Front facing rooms have the most amazing views.

We had our civil partnership at hassop hall on Friday 4th October. We could not have asked for a more special day, it was amazing. Helen, Tom and the team at Hassop were instrumental in making the day feel so special. Everything went like clock work, the food, wine, service, hospitality and rooms were above and beyond our expectations. From the moment we arrived on Thursday to when we left on Saturday morning we felt on cloud nine. We were particularly impressed with Helen during the planning of our wedding and could not have asked for a more supportive, experienced and professional person to help us with the mammoth task of organising a wedding for over a hundred of our family and friends. We could not recommend hassop enough to anyone out there whose looking for the perfect wedding venue. We will remember this day for rest of our lives and plan to return.

We stayed at Hassop Hall for a family wedding, the room was shall we say very chintzy and very dated. At £100 per night I would have expected far more than what was on offer, the room was very dusty and there was thick layers of dust in all the light fittings.

The shock was when it came to the bathroom again thick dust in the light fittings and also mildew and dust in the extractor fan over the bath and shower. All this should have been picked up on a standard inspection either by housekeeping or the hotel management.

They also seem to have some sort of problem with lighting in rooms and the hotel in general, they seem to prefer to keep things dimly illuminated. The light fittings and chandeliers again covered in dust and look like they haven't been cleaned for a very longtime, I can understand its very difficult to clean them but even a light clean would improve them greatly.

The hall in general has very nice general rooms, even if again they are dimly illuminated. Don't expect great things from the bar unless you drink wine as there is lots to chose from wine wise. There are only two choices of beer which are served from 500ml bottles a cheap nasty polish beer and a rather flat tasting Chatsworth gold, however the price of these beers is far from cheap!

We attended a buffet supper on the evening of our first stay and I can honestly say £25.99 is not worth spending on what was offered roast ham a bit of cheese and deserts that if you have a nut allergy like myself you can't eat.

Breakfast the next day was a complete different story, It was fantastic and had something for everyone the staff couldn't do enough for you and this time they catered to those of us that food allergies. Whether this was because it was the day of the wedding I do not know as I got the impression they didn't want anything to ruin the big day, so nothing was to much trouble for them that day.

It was a good stay and the wedding day was fantastic, the food for that day was amazing and they catered for everyone that had allergies and the staff were amazing and very helpful.

Hassop Hall is still stuck in the 1900's where they feel they can charge an extortionate amount of money for staying in a tired and worn stately home that offers very little and think they can get away with it.

Hassop Hall management and the Chapman family seriously need to take a look at room decoration and most definitely the cleanliness of these rooms. They should also think about revising there prices as there are better hotels in the area that offer far more and for a fraction of the price that Hassop Hall offers.

Room Tip: Stay at the Cavendish, you may pay more for it but its worth it!!

Attended Hassop Hall for a family wedding. Our room was comfortable for the most part, however for £100 per night I would have expected better as opposed to dust and mildew in the bathroom fan and dust in the light fittings. That's those that work. As I say the room was comfortable if not a bit 'scruffy'.
The surrounding and interiors were lovely and the staff could not do enough for you and were very pleasant and obliging.
The bar had a poor choice of beer that was expensive but the wine list was extensive and for the most part reasonable in price.
We attended a buffet supper in the evening a roasted ham with accompaniments and desserts it was certainly not worth £25.
The wedding however was well organised by the staff and the wedding breakfast was superb and the staff very well organised delivering the food to the guests and also the wine.
The evening buffet was also very good.
Breakfast was excellent and value for money & good quality, the staff would also oblige with poached or fried eggs if requested too. We had a good stay but management need to look at some of the rooms re cleanliness and decoration, revisit pricing of the rooms, look at beer choice in the bar. The staff must be commended for their attitude and hard work.

My husband and myself live locally in Chesterfield but have treat ourselves to 2 sperate nights at Hassop Hall because we love the place!! Old and full of charm and antiques with spectacular views over the Derbyshire countryside . Perfect terrace to enjoy a bottle or 2 of bubbles. We have stayed in the Standard room and a Superior room, both were wonderful. The Superior room bathroom was amazing, pure luxury and worth the extra money. The only improvement I would make is that the superior room could have one large bed rather than two doubles pushed together, this would make it 6 stars out of 5 then. Breakfast served in your room is an extra touch that I haven't seen anywhere else and I must say it was beyond fabulous!!

Room Tip: Pay the extra for a Superior room.

I attended a 70th birthday celebration involving 42 people and a five course dinner. It is a while since I have been here but the whole ambience and organisation makes it near perfect for occasions such as this one.
Just arriving is classy with a well lit drive, superb grounds, easy parking and an excellent concert hall opposite the main hotel and created from converted outbuildings. The welcome was warm but professional, the staff friendly and well trained, and our meal extremely good.
Our hosts were equally delighted and felt that they had been well looked after. Just the place for an event such as this.
