This was our second Christmas visit here and the Narnia theme is truly magical. The rooms are beautifully decorated, from the fur coat wardrobe, tea with mr Tumnus to the lifelike Aslan. It takes you back to your childhood. The gardens at this time of the year are at there best, beautiful autumnal colours are everywhere. An additional attraction was the Christmas market with many varied stalls

I have always wanted to visit Chatsworth House which I had chance of doing today... I was very disappointed.I was charged £17 to visit the house, only to be allowed to go through about 5 rooms ! It was so busy it was very difficult to see anything in detail. The only way out was into the gift shop which was crowded and all I wanted to do was get out ! I then went for a walk in the grounds which were lovely. Trying to get something to eat was a nightmare...not a seat to be had so I gave up. There were three or four gift shops all selling the same things..All in all I felt that it was a money making machine ! It will be a while before I visit Chatsworth again if ever. Not value for money !

Thank you for taking the time to comment regarding your recent visit to Chatsworth. We are very sorry to hear you were disappointed with your visit to the house this Christmas season.

Our Christmas displays take place in the house each year from the beginning of November until 23 December, and during this time the second floor of the house is closed for annual conservation. We are not in the business of trying to mislead our visitors, so we make every effort to communicate the fact that during the Christmas displays it is only the lower floors of the house that are open to the public. This is included on the Christmas page and house & displays page of our website, on the events calendar and on the map itself in the welcome map you will have been given on arrival, and on the Duke and Duchess’s welcome at the house entrance.

Until we began winter opening in 2001, the entire house was closed in the winter. We have offered visitors a separate Christmas season since that time, concentrating our decorations on the lower floors only so that conservation can still take place on the second floor. Visitors still see many of the most splendid rooms in the house, but it is deliberately a different, though we believe comparable, experience from visiting at other times of year. We have many visitors who come back year after year to see the changing decorations each Christmas, and we have had some exceptionally positive feedback so far.

We also take the safety and welfare of our visitors very seriously and can assure you that we have strict operational limits placed on the number of visitors we allow in the house at any one time. On extremely busy days, the visitor level is monitored, and when necessary we close the house temporarily to prevent further congestion. However, we have had record numbers of visitors this Christmas season which is forcing us to rethink how we handle large numbers of visitors all at one time. As a direct response we have extend our opening hours in order to improve the visitor experience in the short term, and we are exploring the possibility of timed entry tickets as a way of managing visitor flow during the 2014 Christmas season.

Thank you again for taking the time to write to us. It is vital that we receive customer reactions, both positive and negative, in order to help us monitor and improve the visitor experience at Chatsworth.

This was one of the best house and gardens I have ever visited. At the time of the visit there was a Christmas market which was excellent. In the house everything was good to the eye, and there weren't signs saying do not touch all over the place. It also had a lovely Christmas display. The gardens were well kept and long walks available.

Went to Chatsworth as a last minute decision yesterday. What a lovely surprise! The Christmas market was on. I am not always impressed with the stalls at Christmas markets, but here there was a lovely selection of goods being sold. I could have bought something from every stall, as they were good quality and unusual gifts. If you are struggling to find someone a present, I am sure you will find something here. Children and adults gifts. Wrap up warm so you don't have to race around. Plenty of places to find hot drinks, soup and food. Just £3 to park.

Thank Valerie E
