“Favorite National Trust Site”
Reviewed 26 July 2008

Haddon Hall was recommended by our B&B hosts and the other guests staying at the B&B. It lived up to the recommendation. We traveled 1700 miles around the UK and this was our favorite place. It was the site of many movies, most notably two versions of Jane Eyre, but also Harry Potter, the old Narnia series, and Princess Bride. It is very very beautiful. There are climbing roses everywhere. The gardens are breathtaking. The topiaries are fun, the grounds beautiful.

As you approach the hall, crossing a small bridge over a little stream, the Hall is framed by the surrounding trees in such a way that you look and it's a scene straight from the Jane Eyre movies. You feel that you are stepping back in time. You expect to hear the pounding hooves of Rochester's horse overtaking you as you near the huge nail-studded door. As you enter the courtyard, you expect to hear mad Mrs. Rochester's cries echoing round.

“play "Jane Eyre" for a day”
Reviewed 3 May 2007

Haddon Hall is very much like it would have been in the 14th and 15th centuries (when, among others, Elizabeth I lived here as a young woman). It is relatively small (certainly compared to Chatsworth, which is nearby), but very absorbing -- like walking into a time warp.

The chapel, among other parts, is really unbelievable. How it has survived without "improvements" for all these centuries, I can't imagine.

FYI: this is where the recent Jane Eyre (shown on Masterpiece Theater in the US) was filmed. I was certain I recognized it while watching the film, and looked it up to be sure.
