“Better than I expected”
Reviewed 10 April 2012

After booking two single rooms in the Courtyard for my daughter and myself I read some of the reviews and felt a little apprensive about our stay.

However, it was a most agreeable 2 nights. The rooms were in good condition, the beds extremely comfortable with spotless linen and 4 pillows. The bathroom also was well equipped with a excellent supply of towels. The room was cleaned each day to a good standard.

We enjoyed the food which was well prepared and presented, with plenty of choice. The staff were both efficient and friendly, nothing seemed to be too much trouble.

An other plus was the number of comfortable chairs in various areas, some in front of a REAL FIRE. However I do have to agree with another reviewer that all the clocks seemed to show a different time, none of which was correct.

I would certainly use this hotel again and recommend it to my friends.

Room Tip: My room in the Courtyard had a window looking on the car park with the main hotel in view across th...

I am a big fan of afternoon teas so when we decided to go to Bakewell for the day I started scouting for a place to sample afternoon tea. The Rutlands was very good value for money as it showed as being £15.95 for 2 people so i booked a table at 2.30. On the day it turned out we got through most of the shops quicker then expected so went at 2pm and asked if we could have it early. Staff were very good and led us to a charming room to have our afternoon tea. Walking through the hotel I could see its a bit worn down. Wallpaper peeling and cracks but it is a old buidling and old buildings are not cheap to renovate- especially in this day and age. Anhyhoo back to the afternoon tea - everything came quickly. Was suprised the tea came in bags rather then leaf form but was no problem. Portions were huge - one sandwhich each, massive scone, large slice of chocolate cake and chunk of fruit cake. We had to take the cakes homes as after the sandwhich and scone we were stuffed! My husband enjoyed it more then me and said its the best we have had but i dont personally agree. It would have been nice to have more sandwhich choices such as beef or chicken. The cakes do not need to be so big - smaller dantier cakes are for me what makes afternoon tea. However the MR loved it so all in all was happy with what we got and for the price was 100% bargain.

We stayed at Rutland Arms Hotel for one night on 30th March. Overall i think Rutland Arms is a very good hotel and i cannot understand some of the poor reviews it has been given.
I had booked a 4 poster room, Turner Room, and the room itself was well decorated and a good size, however the bathroom was a bit on the small side. We did have a very good nights sleep and the location of the hotel is excellent, right in the centre of Bakewell.
The breakfast was excellent and to a very high standard and the service throughout at breakfast on Saturday and reception on Friday Night. The receptionist, sorry can't remember her name, deserves special mention as we had a few things to sort out and she could not have been more helpful.
One final point, i do feel the number of parking spaces available is not enough if the hotel is full and the suggestion to double-park if no spaces is not an ideal solution.
Overall though a very good hotel

Not a good hotel in our opinion. On arrival we were given a room in the courtyard. The decor was in very poor condition and had clearly not been decorated in some time. Wallpaper had been damaged where previous fixtures had once been with no attempt to ‘make good’. Furniture upholstery was also badly worn and stained. There was months, if not years, of dust built-up on top of the wardrobe, indicating that the room had not been thoroughly cleaned in some time.
There was shampoo/ shower gel still on the tiles in the bathroom, suggesting that the bathroom had not been cleaned properly since the previous occupants and the toilet seat was very badly stained and needed replacing. The room was very poor
We contacted reception who immediately acknowledged our concerns and moved us to a room in the main hotel.
We were given a much better room with a four poster bed. The room had clearly undergone recent redecoration and re-upholstering unfortunately it was let down by a lopsided broken lamp with exposed wiring, a stained chair that had been missed out during the rooms refurbishment and we later discovered that the shower was useless.
The decor in the rest of the hotel was tired and the carpets in the main foyer worn. Furniture had clearly not been moved in an effort to clean the floors behind. There was also some very poor DIY around the hotel.
We decided not to eat in the hotel as a result of our observations although we did have a drink in the bar. Again this was a let-down due to what appeared to be the end of the barrel which left one of the drinks cloudy.
We found the staff to be friendly but lacking enthusiasm.
We chose to stay at this hotel using a 'hotel experience' gift voucher from family. If we had personally paid to stay here we would have asked for a refund and gone elsewhere. In our opinion this hotel was a let-down and not worthy of the rates advertised on its website (especially the rooms we had viewed). We expected much more from it.
Such a shame as the building itself is fantastic and in a great location but it’s sadly let down by its tired interior and poor housekeeping and maintenance standards.

I also noticed that fire extinguishers had not been services as per regulations and that electrical items had not been PAT tested.

Our experience was not one we expected and we would not go back or recommend this hotel. Sorry

The first impression was a bad one.
I realised we were early, and understood we might have to leave our bags until after lunch. However I expect reception to at least pretend to see whether rooms might be ready early, and to say something like; "Sorry your rooms are not ready yet." NOT to just say "Check in time isn't until 2pm." without checking the numbers.
I asked if I could have help with the luggage, this was ignored, but I was told where I could put the bags in a cupboard after I dragged them in myself.
Once we walked into the bar though, the staff could not have been friendlier from then on.

Good food, most of the staff helpful and friendly, and an excellent location in town.

We recently spent two nights at the Rutland Arms Hotel in Bakewell.
The experience was very positive - very comfortable room, good bathroom, smiling and attentive staff.
We had one evening meal in the 4 rosette dining room which was excellent. An innovative and interesting menu very good presentation and wine list.

Quaint and a bit scruffy but with such charm it didn't really matter. Clocks everywhere, all showing different times and quirky throughout. Dinner was beautifully presented and obviously prepared by someone who really cares. The staff could not have been nicer and it was a very pleasant experience staying here especially with the deal we had. The only negative was a really uncomfortable bed - would not like to spend more than a night on it!

Room Tip: Get the biggest room you can - ours was very small although adequate.
