“The Rutland Arms was a home away from home!”
Reviewed 3 November 2013

My family and friends traveled to England at the beginning of September for an Anniversary party for my parents. The staff could not have been any nicer or the hotel more comfortable. I've stayed in other hotels in London and Derbyshire and the rooms were much smaller than the accommodations we found at the Rutland. The rooms were a lovely size and the beds comfortable. Our windows looked right out into the square and the town is laid out in such a way that everything is walking distance. We stayed in a room with our 1 year old daughter, and traveled with several adults who were disabled or had mobility challenges. The breakfast was lovely every morning, and even now I miss my cup of tea. There were other places in town to get afternoon tea, but don't bother looking further than the Rutland. The scones were delightful and everything handled with such grace and charm. We left on first name basis with the staff and promised ourselves that we would be back. I'm already looking forward to our next visit.

Room Tip: The rooms that look over the square were also prone to the noise of traffic, but it was only truly n...

Like a number of other reviewers, we were a little dubious about this hotel but experience has shown that some people can take the smallest of faults and blow them out of all proportion. So we take them with pinch of salt.
The Rutland is in the heart of Bakewell and ideal for exploring the Peak District. The hotel has rooms in both the main building and in a courtyard across the road. We stayed in a double room in the main building. The room was clean, well proportioned and nicely decorated. It came with its own en suite bathroom which featured both a bath and shower. The room was a little on the warm side despite no heating being on so we slept with the window open. The bed was fitted with a plastic covering over the mattress which we understand may be required but with the ambient warmness of the room made sleeping a little uncomfortable at times. Of course, there are all the usual features including tea and coffee facilities and flat screen TV. The television was noteworthy as only 7 channels were available including BBC Alba!. Remember this is Derbyshire not Scotland!!. Anyway, this is only a minor cripe, we do not go on short breaks to watch TV.
The hotel staff were helpful and attentive. There was a good choice at breakfast time including the full 'English'. Worth mentioning is the bacon which was excellent. I meant to ask where they sourced it from but forgot, oh well. The bar was comfortable and offered a range of meals which are good value. We both had fish and chips which can be recommended. If you are staying on a B&B basis like we did, Bakewell offers a number of eateries so you should find something you like.
The hotel has it's own car park which is always a big plus. It is across the road from the main building but this did not pose any real problems. The car park is a little cramped so care is needed.
So there you are, our review of the Rutland Arms. Would we stay there again?. Yes probably which say's it all really. One tip, pay with a debit card to avoid extra charges put on credit card transactions.

Room Tip: Choose a room in the main hotel. I understand the rooms in the courtyard are not quite so good.

On arrival at the Rutland Arms we suddenly realised it had been "featured" in an episode of the Hotel Inspector a couple of years ago. Some of the staff remain but most of the clocks have gone. We had an enjoyable 2 night stay, with 3 rooms booked late and located over the road from the main building in the outbuildings. The rooms were quite plain but very clean and the bathrooms functioned well. The staff were all exceptionally friendly and are the Rutland Arms main asset. Food was in the main good, but was noticeably better on one night than the next, suggesting that a change of chef had a big effect. The location is excellent for tourist attractions like Chatsworth and Haddon Hall.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the main hotel.

We were dubious about visiting the hotel as it had bad reviews, but we were nicely surprised. The Hotel was full of old world charm, the roomswere clean, the food was delicious and the staff friendly and helpful

Room Tip: We were in the main hotel in room 20 with a four poster bed which only cost us an extra £10.00

Recently celebrated my son's wedding at this hotel, civil ceremony on the premises. I cannot praise them enough - excellent liaison prior to the big day, all went according to plan, food and service top notch! Some guests stayed overnight and all found the rooms to be of a high standard with a hearty breakfast! The Wedding Packages they offer are very good value and I would highly recommend this venue.

Room Tip: Rooms in the main building have all been refurbished and are full of character.

My wife and myself called in to the Rutland around 9.30 pm on a Friday night on the off chance there might be a room for the night. The only room available was a twin so we took this. The greeting at reception could not have been more friendly or helpful. We where shown to our room which was warm and comfortable. In the morning the breakfast staff where first class. The food was served promptly and was of a high standard. The whole experience at the Rutland would take a lot of beating and I do not hesitate in recommending them to friends and strangers a like. Well done the Rutland Hotel!
R Kane.

On arrival we were allocated a quality room. Then staff changed and so did the room. We were given what looked like the maids room - a single turned double. No wardrobe, no bedside tables, nails protruding from skirting, diry damp walls, TV not visible from bed, dusty. Smelly shabby bathroom - and they wanted us to pay over £100 for the night. I was so angry I could not sleep at all and soent half of the night reading and crying in reception. The night porter was so helpful and very kind to me - making me tea and biscuits and telling me who to report to at 8am.
Room was reducred to £50 for the night but we were shocked to listen to swearing [---] coming from the kitchens during a very excellent breakfast. We did not find this as funny as the waiter did. Will never, never, never go there again. Sadly lacking in staff at all times of the day - do not understand the word service. I recommend you all find somewhere else.
