“Excellent meal and a great atmosphere”

We booked The Manners on bank holiday weekend having searched for somewhere which is dog friendly . 9 of us ate here and the service was good , the food excellent . The children were well catered for , steaks cooked to perfection and the wine to our taste. Overall, the food was reasonably priced and we shall definitely return on our next trip to Bakewell.

We are regular visitors to Bakewell, and have stopped in accommodation covering a range of price points from The Castle at around £80 a night to Bagshaw Hall at £160 a night. The accommodation at the Manners is priced at £70 a night, including breakfast. In Bakewell, at this price point, our expectations weren't high. We wandered in off the street last November to have a look, with a view to staying in the future, and could see the place required a little TLC. In January, we decided to make a booking for 3 nights in May, we were just looking to get away on a budget over half term week, and this seemed ideal.

We arrived on Sat 24th May, wet and soggy from a day’s cycling on the Monsal Trail. We were very surprised when we walked in to see that the place had completely changed! The Manners has received a badly needed makeover, and now looks much more stylish! The decor is quite quirky - old wooden beer crates, light fittings resembling light bulbs, peacock feather wallpaper, old B&W photos of Bakewell etc. We really liked this, and felt the balance was just right - stylish but not tacky.

The landlord checked us in and was very welcoming. He showed us to our room, which had also been redecorated - looking much more modern than the outdated pictures on the website - including a flat screen TV and one of the most comfortable mattresses we've slept on whilst staying away from home.

Breakfast on our first morning was fantastic - the best we've had anywhere. We both opted for a full English, which consisted of two slices of crispy smoked streaky bacon (mmmmm!), a nicely spiced sausage, a fresh grilled tomato, eggs however you want them and a slice of black pudding. And as much toast as you wanted. Perfect portion size. The real coffee from the barista machine was very good! Fruit juices were also served, these were basically whatever you wanted from behind the bar. The quaintness continued here - with milk served in mini milk bottles, and jam/marmalade in mini mason jars which we thought were really nice touches!

Breakfast on the following two mornings was still very good - but not quite to the standard of the first morning. The ingredients changed slightly - different bacon and sausage - and more of it. My wife opted for scrambled eggs and bacon and the 2nd and 3rd mornings, and they were more than happy to oblige.

There are a few negatives - the heating system is noisy - when on, the radiators in both the bathroom and bedroom constantly make a 'ticking' noise. It's not loud, but enough to be annoying if you wake in the night. On the 2nd and 3rd nights, we turned the radiators off before going to bed which solved the problem. This might not be an option in the winter. Another noise issue - the rooms are above the kitchen, and adjacent to the outdoor smoking area. This meant that you could hear a lot of banging of pots and pans, and a lot of chat outside. But obviously this stops before it's time to go to sleep. The bathroom looks to have recently had a new shower, toilet and sink - but it does look a bit tired still and could probably do with a refit. It was functional and clean though - and the shower (electric) was as powerful as the one at home.

Given the price point, we feel these points are minor - and don't detract from the overall rating. However, we like to give an honest and balanced review.

Perhaps our only regret whilst staying was that we didn't stay for an evening meal. We had already planned our meals - however, we did have lunch at the Manners on day 3 - both opting for the Rare Beef & Rocket Sandwich - which was absolutely delicious! Plenty of lovely pink beef, served with a side salad and homemade crisps. At only £6 each this was very reasonable. The sandwich was served on a slate, and the cutlery arrived in an up-cycled golden syrup tin. Some people might find this a bit fussy, but we really like these sorts of touches! The day we ate lunch at the Manners, it was market day - as the Manners is not in the town centre, it was nice to be able to eat somewhere that wasn’t full to the brim with people. They have a great selection of beers, ales and wines - all of which are reasonably priced. Based on the quality of the breakfasts and the lunch we ate, we will definitely be trying an evening meal at the Manners the next time we are in Bakewell.

Overall, we had an excellent stay, and will definitely be returning in the future. There are certainly nicer places in Bakewell to stay; but these come at a price premium. The Manners by far have the best balance of quality and value for money you will find in Bakewell!

We'd heard on the grapevine that Bryan and Sarah Moran had left Sheffield to run a more fitting establishment - a good quality pub grub place which Bakewell so desperately needs. We have eaten many times at Morans' in Sheffield and thought it was by far the best restaurant in Sheffield - so good ALL the time.
We were excited to visit the Manners and how disappointed. I ordered the Venison Burger - £11 including cheese. My partner ordered scampi at the same price. It arrived promptly and don't get the obsession with serving everything on boards or on slates with everything in tin pots or tiny bowls. Plates are just fine. Portions v small - i had to go to Co-op to get something else to eat. Not great to spend over £30 for 2 main courses, a glass of wine and a soft drink to then have to go to a supermarket to get some more food? Come on guys - you can do so much better. Up the cost and let us leave feeling as though we've eaten. Burger was tasty -scampi bit insipid.
Wont be going back - gutted as was so excited. Good service though.

My husband, son and I called in for a meal just before the present owners took over. The atmosphere, beer and food choice were dire but that was, we now realise because of the imminent change of ownership. We decided on this visit never to return.
Advance a few months and we had heard that ownership had changed and things ere on the up. Tonight we made the return trip and were very pleasantly surprised. The food was outstanding and the prices were good too. The beer choice was good as was the wine and we will certainly return.
The staff were attentive and friendly and many tables were already booked for the evening. If this continues I see nothing but good things for The Manners.
Don't be fooled by the outside facade as this place is a real gem and won't disappoint.
I'm already looking forward to my next meal. I had the Brie and garlic chicken with herb risotto and my husband had scampi. Mine was delicious and my hubby said it was the best scampi he had ever had. We had sticky toffee pudding to share with 1 large glass of red wine, 2 pints of San Miguel and a cappuccino and the bill was £40. I'd say that was pretty good.

Room Tip: Sorry, ignore sleep quality rating. We didn't stay but clicked by mistake and cannot take the r...

As we were staying just around the corner, we decided to go here for our last night in Bakewell, and we were glad that we did. Our meals were very good. I had the fish and chips, which was tasty and well cooked. My wife had the steak which was cooked as she likes it. At a tenner a head it was quite reasonable. The Robinson's Unicorn ale was pleasant and cheaper than the prices in the centre of the town. We stayed for the Quiz night, which was very friendly and light hearted. Unlike our local pubs 'down South', people actually spoke to us!

We've visited Bakewell several times but have never stayed there so decided this time that was what we would do.
Our choice of B&B was The Manners Hotel and what good value it turned out to be!
The owners Brian and Sarah had only been there for five weeks but you wouldn't have known it.
We arrived early, checked in and had a very good pint of Robinson's Real Ale while we waited for our room to be ready. The room had just been re-decorated and was very good, a decent size with a very comfortable bed. The bathroom with over bath shower was a little dated but like the rest of The Manners, spotlessly clean.
We decided to have our evening meal at The Manners before an evening stroll around Bakewell and again this proved to be a great choice. The food was of excellent quality, well cooked and delicious. I had beer battered Scampi tails with home made chips and salad while my wife had beer battered cod with home made chips and minted peas and we would recommend both!
The breakfasts next morning were also of good quality and we had a good chat with Sarah and Barman/Waiter/Handyman Ben before leaving Bakewell via the monthly Farmers Market.
Lovely room, excellent ales, superb food and friendly owners/staff. What more could you want?

We've stayed here a few times over the years but have never felt compelled to leave a review until our stay over the weekend. As a previous reviewer said, the pub/hotel is under new management, and what a fantastic team they are. They all took time to speak to us to ensure we had everything we needed. Ben in particular was a wonderful host. The bar is very welcoming and although we didn't eat this time, the food looked wonderful! The room was very clean and comfortable, and previous comments about noise are unfounded, we slept very well. The team is very flexible about breakfast times, recognising that not all visitors want to be up and out early when on holiday, a big plus! Breakfast was delicious! The pub is in the perfect location, a 2 minute walk from the centre. I can't think of anything negative to say, we'll definitely be back!!
