“excellent location, superb cottage”

Having stayed in this cottage last year I feel I must write this review to say this is an excellent, immaculate cottage inside and out. I see from a previous review they state it is noisy next door to a builders yard my family and I found this not to be the case, as we were never disturbed by any noise with no difficulty getting in and out to park our vehicle. This is a top class place to say and nothing bad could be said about this property. The owners are most helpful and kind. We would fully recommend this cottage to stay in as it fits in superbly with the wonderful character of Bakewell. We hope to return next year again for another holiday. Having stayed in other self catering accommodation in the town this is by far the best of them all.

“Some nice parts, some problems”
Reviewed 6 October 2013 for a stay in September 2013

One thing not mentioned in the description of this place, but mentioned in the directions you receive once you book, is that it is right next to a builder's merchants. Not down the street, but right next door. The builder's merchants opens at 7am, Monday to Saturday, so do not count on having a lie-in unless you are a heavy sleeper.

Chances are, though that you won't want a lie-in because (with the exception of the master bedroom) the beds are terrible. The two twin beds in the second bedroom have poor-quality mattresses on which you can feel the springs through, even when they are turned the right way up (they were the wrong way up, so even worse, when we arrived). The second bedroom also has absolutely no windows onto the outside world, so no natural light at all. It has a window into the third bedroom / upstairs sitting room, but this doesn't stop it feeling very claustrophobic. It also has a very low sloping ceiling that means there's a very good chance you'll bang your head on the ceiling unless you're very short. The futon/sofa thing in the third bedroom is terrible, the mattress is so thin that you can't help but feel the wooden slats through it. I had such a poor night's sleep on this that I decamped to the couch in the downstairs living room after the first night. Also, the third bedroom / upstairs sitting room has a skylight-style window in the sloping roof. This wouldn't be a problem but for the big handle you have to turn in order to open and close it. The handle is so long that you can't close the blind all the way, meaning you have to choose between a dark room and a quiet one. Given the closeness of the aforementioned builder's yard, this means the room is pretty much unusable as a bedroom.

The master bedroom is fine - big, comfortable bed, and the ensuite is a little small but generally fine. No complaints about this. If there's just the two of you staying, then I'd imagine you can have a decent's night sleep here (although if there's just the two of you, why would you be renting a property so big?).

The bathroom for the second and third bedrooms is OK. Again, a little small, but nicely outfitted. The shower itself works well. However, when we were there we found the shower almost flooded rather than draining away - we found this was because the hair catcher hadn't been emptied in some time and was clogged with hair. This was a problem from the first day we arrived (I had a shower just a couple of hours after we arrived and noticed it did not drain as it should), so was not down to our usage of the shower.

The kitchen was fine, no problems. We didn't really use it much, we ate out every night. The regular fridge had a note on it saying that it wasn't working so another fridge was supplied, but we found that both fridges seemed to work OK, so we used them both.

The downstairs living room was fine. The couches were very comfortable. The TV worked OK, although due to the rather arcane and obscure workings of the cable or satellite TV box we had trouble finding the correct channels (eg there were about half a dozen different BBC1s listed). After a day or two we found a tiny, handwritten piece of paper with some channel numbers on it next to the TV, but this could possibly have been printed out on A4 and left on the coffee table in order to make it easier to find than something that looked like it had been written on the back of a shop receipt. The supplied wifi was easy to connect to and worked without any problems - the key was written on both the documentation we received and a sticker on the box (high up on the wall, just inside the front door). This was especially handy as in Bakewell (as most of the Peak District) the mobile reception and 3G internet is terrible to borderline nonexistent, so having a solid connection available at the cottage was very useful.

Bakewell itself is lovely, very cozy and close. This cottage's proximity to the centre of Bakewell was definitely it's best point - however it is one that it shares with a number of other properties, so although we will most likely go back to Bakewell, it's very unlikely we will be renting this property again. Given that the primary purpose of these places is to give you a place to rest and sleep at night before you go off out and do something during the day, the fact that you can't get a good night's sleep here means I have to give it a poor rating. If it wasn't somewhere as nice as Bakewell, I would give it 1/5.

Management Response

Although new to Tripadvisor we have been renting out Coulsden Cottage for 4 years now and are extremely disappointed to receive this review. We have other holiday cottages and a bed a breakfast and take feedback (both positive and negative) very seriously. There are however a number of things about this review that we have to take issue with.
Firstly on the location page of our website we do say that we share our driveway with the builders yard. The cottage however is sheltered back away from the builders yard driveway behind 6ft high wooden gates. Also they open at 8.00am not 7,00am as claimed by the reviewer.
Also the layout of the bedrooms is clearly shown on the website with floor plans and accompanying pictures. Anyone who has done their research properly can be under no doubt about what to expect.
On arrival all guests have a welcome letter with the cottage information and a clear request that if there are any problems they contact us immediately. Phone numbers are provided - we are 10 min away. Despite staying for a week this reviewer failed to contact us with any problems during their stay.
The reviewer clearly had issues which they failed to convey to us but despite this has still scored the cottage with 4 out of 5 in 7 out of the 9 catogories and therefore it seems a little churlish to give it an overall score of only 2 out of 5.
We have many guests who return to Coulsden Cottage time and time again who clearly would not do so if there were any serious issues to concern them. Bearing this in mind, and the points above, it is therefore hard to accept this review seriously.

Liked best: The charm and location of the cottage
Liked least: Access to parking area generally no problems but inconsiderate car drivers made access difficult on a couple of occasions. The owners were quick to respond and help however.
