Kath and Kieth are two very friendly people. They make you feel so welcome and do everything to make your stay as pleasant and comfortable as possible. We enjoyed the tasty cooked breakfast, the hospitality and the beautiful surroundings.

A big thank you to them both.

Room Tip: The rear bedrooms have the best views.

Just arrived back from our second visit to Woodside and already counting down the days to our third visit. We can't wait to experience again Kath and Keith's hospitality, not to mention the plentiful and well cooked breakfasts, the delicious scones, cakes and jams all made by Kath herself, the clean and airy bedrooms with wonderful views and the comfortable lounge complete with wood burning stove to warm the chilly evenings.
Breakfast is served in the conservatory overlooking a pretty garden frequented by pheasants, woodpeckers, jays, finches and other small birds during our stay.
There is an abundance of things to do and see around Woodside and wonderful countryside to explore. We have been fortunate enough to have spotted Black Norwegian Fallow Deer a short distance from Kath's house on both our visits!
The hospitality shown to us by Kath and Keith made this feel like a real home from home and Kath's lively and interesting conversation was a joy to share.
We can't wait to go back to Woodside and have no hesitation in recommending it to others.

April 10th. 2011 we arrived again at the doorstep of Woodside to be greeted by Keith in his usual cheery way, into the hallway we were met by Kath coming out of the kitchen, where else! into the sitting room to be greeted by some home made scones, cream, jam and a fresh pot of tea This is the norm for Woodside, we have been there on two previous accasions. We were shown to our room, overlooking the Derwent valley, which was clean , airy and well appointed.
The first full day of our holiday began in the conservatory/breakfast room, once again overlooking the Derwent valley and the garden that seems to attract all kinds of birds, helped by the food put out for them by our hosts. Breakfast, now there is another story, you name it and it will be there in good quantity and quality.Nothing is too much trouble for Kath, she is a very busy lady but she looks after her guests first.
Walking can be had straight from the front door up onto Stanton Moor and beyond. Touring by cycle or car leaves you with a problem of where to go there is such a large variaty, scenery or stately homes all close by.
Evenings when you arrive back at Woodside you could be invited into the sitting room for a cup of tea and a social chat on all manner of subjects or you can go to your room and watch that square box in the corner of the room.
We would just like to add that if you like home made preserves and fruit salad this is the place to go. We will be going back, Woodside is more than home from home.

From the moment we walked throught the door we were made to feel special by being welcomed with the most beautiful cream tea with home-made scones and jam. We were welcomed as part of the family and given our own space too. Kath and Keith would do anything they could to help. The highlight of our stay there was the magnificent cooked breakfasts and the live bird show just outside the conservatory while we were eating and the knowledge of Kath as she told us about these beautiful and rarely seen birds. We saw birds we had never seen before.

It really was an excellant place to stay and we will definately be returning.

Kath & Keith greet you warmly on arrival and then provide beverages and a delicious homemade cake.
The rooms are stylish and comfortable.
The breakfasts are well cooked and if you want something different from the "full english" Kath is happy to provide it.The view from the breakfast room overlooks the valley and is a lovely start to the day with a variety of birds visiting the garden.

I was fortunate to discover Woodside Cottage on the internet as I stayed there for 2 nights in March on my first weekend break alone following the death of my husband. I received an extemely warm welcome from Kath and her husband, and was made to feel so at ease in their home. The room was very comfortable and well furnished, with lovely views across the countryside and into the garden, where wild birds came to feed. The breakfast was delicious - I was thoroughly spoiled the whole weekend.
I intend returning soon, hopefully with one of my friends, to go walking, as I have been telling them what a wonderful stay I had. I did walk to the Nine Ladies Stone Circle which is quite near and very interesting.
I would recommend anyone to stay with this lovely couple.

Room Tip: Try some of the walks from Woodside Cottage,

Fully agree with the only other review I can see on this B+B. Great value in a very quiet picturesque location. Even though our room was classed as not having a view the outlook was still most agreable, unoverlooked up open green hillside and trees. Greeted with Tea/Coffee and Home made Scones, Jam and proper Cream. Large Comfortable rooms and beds. Bathrooms/Showeroom good and being upgraded. Convenient for out of the door rambles to Rowsely, Haddon Hall (Closed 17th October 2008 Onwards till Chistmas/2009), Stanton Moor and Winster and elsewhere. Fantasic Friendly hospitality and Quality ingrediant Breakfast Choices including vegetarian. Free entertainment every morning with visiting Nuthatches, Woodpeckers, coal tits, great tits, pheasants, Magpies, Green finches, Chafinches and Robins feeding a few feet from you whilst you have breakfast in the conservatory looking down and over the the valley. Hostess Kath is a real character and her passions will keep you amused and hopefully enthused as well.

Our Tips

Great Fish and Chips from Darley Dale Fish Bar. Chinese Takeway in the same block on A6 untried but looked popular with locals. If you are on a budget The Crown (Weatherspoons) Pub in Matlock also serves very good value Evening Meals/deals. We didn't try it but if you are feeling very hungary the Vietnamese at the end of one of the back streets in Matlock looked good value offering an all you can eat buffet for £12-50 on most nights including Saturday night. I think it was called the Lemon tree or something similar.

The Bowling Green Pub in Winster is rightly popular so recommend booking on Friday or Saturday nights.

The Red Lion Pub in Wensley although still marked on OS maps is closed. No other resfreshments available in Wensley Footpaths in from the South of Wensley are not well marked/trodden.

  • Liked — Location and Breakfast
  • Disliked — In Bedroom Vanity Unit/Sink and Lighting need spucing up and probably will be soon. But very handy non the less
