“An Ideally located B&B. Great Hospitality and Personal Touches”
Reviewed 9 June 2013

We were very happy with our B&B. We are both in the hospitality industry and love our mini breaks. Especially loved the homemade cookies, our waffle dressing gowns, homemade jams, reading material on the landing, tasteful arte facts adorning the walls, duke the English bulldog,
Can definitely the fishpond as a place to eat at Matlock Bath 2 mins on the train or a twenty minute stroll. Its a meeting place for bikers.
Anne and John were most charming and helpful. The b&b is situated 2 mins walk from centre of matlock. Lots of shops and a pretty place to wander.
Extremely enjoyable

Thank you for the lovely review, we are glad you liked our decor that is influenced by Africa. We will keep the homemade jams and crunchies coming as it is a real hit with our guests. It is great that you found our location so convenient, we really are only 5 minutes away from the town centre and restaurants. By the way, we totally agree that Duke, our English bulldog, is a real sweetie!

I stayed here with my husband, and another couple of friends whilst walking. Anne and John were very welcoming, our rooms were very comfortable and stylish with some nice touches. The We stayed for 10 nights and never had the same breakfast. I was so pleased to have a proper tea pot in the room, and there was a small cafetiere with freshly ground coffee. Every day, Anne added a couple of delicious home made cakes. The breakfasts were absolutely outstanding. There's a very good choice, including vegetarian and vegan selection. But most mornings John came in and told us what he was planning for the next day's breakfast, and these were exciting and interesting choices over and above the menus. Whatever we chose, it was preceded by a beautifully presented dish of fresh fruit and Greek yogurt. We stayed for ten nights, and we had ten different breakfasts! Whilst we were there, we had a couple of problems with power cables for various pieces of equipment we had with use, but both times John came up with exactly the right thing. Anne and John are kind and caring hosts, and clearly enjoy doing whatever is necessary to make their guests' stay as enjoyable as possible. This is without doubt the best guest house I have ever stayed in.

Thank you very much for taking the time to write such a glowing review and for the compliments about Ellen House and the amenities and services we offer. We love it that you enjoyed our breakfast menu, the fact that you were willing to veer from the traditional full English (as delicious as it is!), and try John's Eggs Benedict and his South African Breakfast as well as variations on our vegetarian options made it possible to ensure something new every morning. It will be great to see you again, although you have truly walked most of the Peak District during your stay!

I haven't stayed here myself but I actually live in a flat right next door. During the harsh winter my flat suffered from frozen pipes and I was unable to shower, therefore also unable to go to work. I tried my luck at asking Ellen House if I could be cheeky and asked if I could use a shower in one of their rooms. Of course I offered pay but I really expected them to laugh in my face and slam the door shut. However I got the complete opposite. They were great, very kind, and of course let me use their facilities and bless them they didn't charge me. But this place is run by a lovely, caring couple and I am very greatful for their kindness.

This is a first for us, a review from a neighbour and not a guest (unless you classify a neighbour in need using our shower as a guest!). Thank you for your kind words, it was an absolute pleasure to let you use one of our showers. What's the use of having neighbours if you can't turn to them in a time of need? As we discovered, cold weather and water pipes can be a nightmare!

John and Anne gave a fantastic welcome to our all male party, it was my Stag weekend, but due to the average age being late 30's we were more interested in the cycling than the drinking ( we were all in bed by 11.30 at the latest) The guest house was spotless, faultless and no where had any signs of tired decor, it was all finished to a very high standard for even the most discerning customer. Nice little extra touches in the rooms with home made treats and fresh coffee etc. Thanks John and Anne we will see you again for sure!! From the "tame" stag Martin

We have just spent a lovely weekend here at Ellen House Matlock. And we just want to say what a fantastic place this has been from its execelent hosts Ann and John who make and serve a fantastic breakfast from a refreshing fruit platter served with natural yoghurt fresh fruit juice to a lovely hot cooked breakfast made to our order the lovely tasty sausage . Sorry John didnt get to try your award winning eggs benedicte! And what was in those stuffed mushroom.
Our room was really really comfortable and lovely and clean with lovely fresh soft towels and robe. And we loved the special little touches of the toiletries and more so the homemade crunchies (really yummy) and we absolutely loved your homemade orange and chilli marmalade wishing now we had bought some to fetch back with us.

Best wishes Linda & Neil (Washington Tyne & Wear)

Thank you for this glowing review. It is good to know that you loved our breakfasts, we get our sausages and bacon from a local butcher, (they won a award for their produce last year!) so we can vouch for the quality. You will have to come back to try some more of our homemade jam and marmalade, still made by my very talented sister!

I stayed here with my Father and my adult Son and we had a really lovely warm welcome and the place was spotlessly clean.
All the rooms were different and decorated in there own individual way with is nice.
The breakfast was really, really very good. I had the 'special' eggs benedict with smoked salmon - WOW, how lovely to be treated with such an amazing dish to get you going in the morning.
The breakfast at this place is just that bit different and with that special extra home touch. A fruit platter, homemade jams and yogurt were all on the table when we came down.
My Son was blown away with his 'full English' and has not stopped talking about his stuffed mushroom all day hahah, he is even going to try to cook them himself so thank you John for your inspirational coking :)
We will defiantly stay again and also will recommend to others - my sister has just moved to Matlock so its good to know of a good local place for when she has parties etc and this place really is perfect for a quick drop in stay for sleep then great breakfast. There is no 'sitting area/lounge type area just the bedrooms and then dinning area but if you are just looking for a place to lay your head then look no further!
Very - very - very convenient for the train station and the town centre and just 2 mins walk away from a decent size Sainsbury's (not 24 hour).
Local - 2-5 mins wal away from some nice places to eat in the town centre as well.
Thank you and see you soon :)
