We just spent 3 wonderful nights at Sheriff Lodge. It's a beautiful big house up a quiet hill but very close to matlock town centre. The owners are so warm and friendly and made us feel relaxed and at home within minutes of our arrival with a lovely cup of tea and biscuits even thought it was 11 oclock at night!

Our room was clean and modern (and not chintzy which seems to be the norm everywhere else which we hate!) and had everything you could need for a comfortable stay including dvd player and sky. And there were the little touches which made it special - a well-stocked up-to-date DVD collection for you to borrow from, a fridge full of free soft drinks in the lounge, a dish of chocs (yum!) and free internet access whilst you chill on the sofa.

But the best thing of all were the breakfasts. Scrummy fresh fruit salad (not a tinned peach in sight!), home-made bread and jams every day, and fantastic cooked breakfasts including delicious veggie and gluten-free options. Need to go on a diet now!

All in all we wouldn't hesitate to recommend to others and looking forward to our next visit. Thanks for a wonderful stay.

We've just spent 3 nights/4 days in The Peak District and couldn't have chosen a better B & B. It was like Home from Home only better as somebody else was making the breakfast and bed.

Kate and Alan gave us a lovely warm welcome, even though we didn't arrive until around 9 o'clock at night. Tea and coffee was made and arrived with a plate of cake and biscuits. This was the start of an excellent stay.

The room was lovely and everything had been thought of; drinks tray including Horlicks and fruit teas, TV and DVD with plenty of DVDs to choose from in the Drawing Room (in the cabinet under the racing car!!), plenty of wardrobe and drawer space, and the Emergency Box was an excellent idea; it contained the items you are most likely to have forgotten like your toothbrush. The size of the bedroom and en-suite bathroom was amazing. It was lovely to have a soak in the bath after walking via High Tor to The Heights of Abraham and back. The walk back to Sheriff Lodge did take a little longer as we didn't manage to get past the Boat House (pub) without sampling the drink and food on offer which was lovely and the open fired helped us to dry out.

We're used to a King size bed at home but were amazed with the size of the bed in The Dray. We've heard of Super King size but this one must be a "Super size me" Super King size; it was huge.

Breakfast continued in the same vein as the warm welcome and lovely room, it was excellent. There was a choice of fruit, cereal, yoghurt, bread that was toasted if preferred (freshly made that morning by Alan - this shouldn't be missed), full English breakfast plus tea and coffee. We're sure if we've forgotten something Kate and Alan won't have!!!

The Drawing Room was a nice area to sit with friends and chat and the freely available cold drinks, fruit, sweets etc was yet another example of those nice little touches.

This B & B definitely deserves its 4 stars and we would recommend it to anybody.

We will certainly be using Sheriff Lodge as the benchmark by which we will judge all future stays at 4 star B & Bs and we look forward to staying there again in the future.

Thanks Kate and Alan for making our stay in The Peak District one to remember.

We have just stayed at this fab little B&B and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for accommodation in this area.

We especially liked the following;

The huge bed was a bonus, we have a super-king size bed at home therefore it was nice to go away and not have to sleep in a small double bed.

Also I really liked the blankets and bedspread instead of a heavy duvet, and it was nice to have large soft fluffy towels in the bathroom.

Liked the DVD player in the room as we did not want stay out too late at night.

The breakfast was WONDERFUL, good selection of fruit and cereal if you don't eat cooked breakfast.

The whole place is very clean and the bathroom did not have that nasty damp smell which we have found in other accommodation.

Kate and Alan are the perfect hosts and they have put a lot of thought into this fab little B&B.

I would also like to mention the Sycomore Inn which is just a short walk (although it is all up hill) the food is very good and not very expensive.

Thanks Kate and Alan we had a wonderful time.

This is an excellent B&B - absolutely spotless with lovely rooms, comfy beds, charming and helpful hosts and HUGE breakfasts! It's location is ideal - situated in easy reach of the centre of Matlock, but still very quiet. Lots of nice little touches such as complimentary drinks and DVDs to borrow. Will definitely come back here again.

The owners were welcoming and friendly. We liked the guest lounge with fruit, chocolate bar, juices, internet, DVDs and comfy sofas. We were surprised that the location was not rural or semi rural as I had expected but suburban to Matlock which is a nice little town. . The house itself looks to be quite old in part. There are good views but a great big ugly YHA building blocks part of the main view, unfortunately, and they've just built a huge sainsbury's which also shines out at night. But you can see lovely hills and Riber Castle too. The whole place is immaculately clean and nice and quiet, and it is clear that the owners are hard working and genuine people who really want you to enjoy your stay. There are nice toiletries in the ensuites although ours were fixed to the wall, we had to ask for soap to use in the bath. (A nice small tablet of soap was willingly offered when we asked.) The beds were new and comfortable and large, heating was good, water nice and hot, decor well thought out and well cared-for. The interior stairs are rather steep so this is not ideal for physically frail people, I would suggest. We were a bit surprised to find breakfast was only available for one hour, perhaps an hour time slot for breakfast isn't quite flexible enough for many people. The breakfasts were excellent, well cooked, home made jams, nice touches like herbs on the scrambled eggs, and a good variety of foods including fresh fruit salad, fruit and nuts, Derbyshire oatcake, black pudding etc as well as all the usual. Altogether a nice place.
