We stayed for two nights, Friday/Saturday and had the 'Nest' on the top floor. A very clean and tidy room with added little touches to make us feel at home. The 'emergency box' in the wardrobe was very thoughtful and contained the things travellers forget...eg toothbrush, plasters, deodorant etc.
We were made very welcome by Sue and Frank who were house sitting whilst the owners were away. You would never know they were deputies and they took great bride in running things especially the breakfasts which were very nice and well presented.
One thing we had overlooked when we booked was the pet friendly status, but despite most customers having small dogs in their rooms, this was no inconvenience to us. In addition, we would never have known any animals had stayed in our room as it was very clean and tidy.
Our room had windows on two sides so provided amazing views of the town and surrounding countryside including Riber castle.

On the first evening we walked to the nearby pub that was recommended and we got a warm welcome from the locals and staff. There were also 4 other parties from our B & B eating there so it proved to be a popular recommendation, despite the steep hill to get there. (Rolling back down the hill after a meal and local brew was a breeze!)

In summary, and excellent stay at the Sheriff Lodge and we can freely recommend it.

Room Tip: The Nest on the top floor has the best views

Thank you very much for your lovely review - we can't wait to share it with Sue & Frank :-) This was their first time looking after Sheriff Lodge for us - but it won't be their last. There is one thing I must bring up though. You mention in your review about '...most customers having small dogs in their rooms'. This is not the case - we only have one dog-friendly room - The Warren, and that's also our family-friendly room (two adults and up to three children - plus dogs, obviously). I think you may have seen two sets of guests - one after the other - with dogs who were in The Warren - and then there's Sue & Frank's dog Coral. That's not to say that The Warren is not kept as clean as our other rooms - obviously:-)
Thanks once again for your great review - and we look forward to seeing you again soon.
Best wishes
Kate & Alan - Proud Owners of Sheriff Lodge

Kate & Alan, B&B hosts are a formidable team. We enjoyed a large, clean room, gigantic breakfasts and snack friendly tea/coffee trays.

The B&B is situated closeby to Matlock shops, easy driving access to Haddon Hall, Bakewell, and walking up a very steep hill, a handy pub.

The best bits were Kate's breakfast starts...not crazy early, Alan's route walk suggestion (complete with free map) and a level of friendliness which seems to be missing from high street shops & restaurants.

Three of us stayed at Sheriff Lodge for 4 nights in May. From the moment we arrived, we felt that we were in a home from home. Our rooms were comfortable, spacious and well looked after. Breakfast is really special with so much choice and the cooked breakfast was plentiful, beautifully presented and cooked to perfection. I have stayed in many hotels and B&Bs, but none quite as special as this. Kate and Alan are wonderful hosts who make their guests' stay really memorable. They are so natural, amusing and one instantly feels relaxed, welcome and well looked after. We are looking forward to returning.

We stayed here over the Easter holidays, during the week of all the snow and ice - we were greeted by Gemma and her partner, whilst Kate and Alan were having their own holiday in Norfolk, and treated to a very welcome cup of tea on arrival, after what felt like a long snowy trek from the station (really it was only maybe 10 minutes away, it only felt longer due to the weather). And the final hill was a bit of a killer (especially when it got icy later on). But that only made Sheriff Lodge all the cosier to come back to!

What more can I add to the previous reviews? We decided to stay here on the advice of other Trip Advisor reviewers, and had very high expectations - and yet somehow, Sheriff Lodge still managed to exceed them! The warmth and friendliness of our hosts (Kate and Alan returned the next day), the superb breakfasts, the ridiculously huge beds and beautiful views, the attention to detail in the design of the rooms... It all added up to a fantastic stay.

Room Tip: We stayed in The Loft with all the owls - lovely views of the hills and Riber Castle.

One of the reasons we picked the B&B was because of the excellent ratings and we certainly weren't disappointed. The room was great, comfortable bed, lovely big bathroom and beautiful views. The breakfast was one of the best I have ever eaten in a hotel and B&B - the homemade bread was very yummy. More than anything Kate and Alan were very helpful and welcoming, their tips meant we saw some greats pubs and did some good walks to earn the drink! We had a lovely weekend in the Peak District and are looking for an excuse to go back.

A warm welcome, helpful, knowledgeable & accommodating hosts, splendid breakfasts, warm rooms in a cold April, a comfortable bed and a splendid shower - what's not to like?
My best B & B.
