We ate here by chance - spotted it on our first morning in Cornwall and just stopped in for lunch. Welcoming, comfortable and obviously popular with the locals. Huge plates of food and the dog was made very welcome too! We sat inside, but there is also limited seating outside. It's not glamorous, the chairs are mismatched and the decor is very individual, but we really loved it - it felt homely. It wasn't intimidating, I didn't have to worry that the kids or the dog would misbehave/ruin the decor, the lady running the bar and taking food orders was friendly and the atmosphere is relaxed. We will be back next time we are in that neck of the woods.
There is also a kids playground just across the road, by the carpark, a good place for active kids to let off steam after a meal.

I couldn't work out whether the bottom score review and bile was intended to inflame or amuse all those who have actual knowledge of and love for this lovely pub. Why didn't Ian H turn on his heel at the threshold and flee towards Table Table at Liskeard or Burger King at Carkeel? His alleged florid revulsion in the face of one of the most laid back un-studied little Cornish pubs with tasty food, written he admits while 'so angry' makes you wonder what experience or expectations he has. He certainly hadn't bothered to read any of the previous reviews on this candid colourful and disinhibited thread. Each review like his does as much and more than the overwhelming majority of positives to make the Rod and Line even better known and to draw in more trade.

For anyone who hadn't picked up on the reality, we and so many other regulars or just occasional visitors delight at every feature of this unspoilt, friendly and hospitable pub. The food is great. No messing. Just very well done. Good to have come back and seen the place in such find fettle. Thank you Ian H for confirming that in Tideford all is still very right with the world. We shall be back.

We came here on a Wednesday in late April. Luckily I had rung ahead to book as it was very busy.

We were initially seated at a small table for two, but the landlord moved a group of local chaps who weren't eating so that we could have more space. I would say that a high proportion of people in the pub were local which is a good sign.

We had scallops which were perfectly cooked in butter with a dash of wine to deglaze the pan and served with all the delicious juices. It came with a big hunk of warm bread and some Cornish butter. There were plenty of scallops considering the price was less than £11 each and that fresh scallops cost £30 per kilo in supermarkets.

We also ordered a plate of battered baby squid to share. Again perfectly cooked, very light batter with a small dish of chilli sauce and one of mayonnaise to dip into. Delicious.

The pub itself is a rare survivor, not having been tarted up. It's dark, cosy, the tables don't match and it has a big log fire. I didn't use the toilets so can't comment on these.

The secret to enjoying this pub is to go with the flow. Don't go there if you are already wound-up, in a hurry or can't be bothered to read what the menu says. If it says scallops and bread that is what you will get - and it will be wonderful. If you want chips, order them separately. Don't fret about ordering, you will be seen to but maybe not as quickly as at the half-empty chain pub down the road. Relax and enjoy.

Our second meal here yesterday. The Hake was enormous and to die for. This pub is authentic - and a very lively landlord. We will be returning for the seafood.

What a waste of time and money this place is. The food was awful, the hygiene appalling and the owner was an obnoxious drunk who seemed to think he was the life and soul of the house. If he were to put as much effort into making sure the place was clean and the food was as described it may be worth a visit, but I am driven to write this review as I am so angry that such a place can be allowed to serve food. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!
