Only manage to drop in about once a year but it is good to find that little changes, that there are still places like this that offer a simple welcome, well kept ale and a straightforward no nonsense menu of traditional pub food without pretentions, rip off prices or nothing more than you need. We can relax and enjoy ourselves here.

Wood fire, simple things like an excellent ham sandwich, hand cut chips etc together with helpful staff and a good attitude. We were made to feel very welcome and i will be coming back here in the future. The beer was well kept and served promptly.

We stopped for dinner late at night,as we were staying nearby, and the weather was atrocious. The barlady was really nice, and we were appreciative of her organising dinner for us so late. The atmosphere was good, as it is a typical English pub full of locals. I would recommend it if you were after a quiet drink, and a simple dinner.

Two or three years ago we came to the village Cherry Feast which was delightful in the garden of and a field behind the rectory or Vicarage. We came on to this pub, had a lovely hour or so and decided then that we would try to come back. Really pleased to discover that nothing seemed to have changed. From the outside it looks like an ordinary large cottage. Just like the photo at the head of this thread. I can't even remember whether there is a pub sign. It looks untended, old, and set back from the road. There is a bit do a hardcore parking area at the back if you pull in and drive around to the left. Inside as much as described by the positive and negative reviews below. It is straightforwardly a traditional rural pub that seems never to have picked up on the food instead of booze metamorphosis. And all the better for that. The drinkers are mostly local but visitors are entirely welcome. We saw no Barbour clothing or moleskin trousers tied with binder twine below the knees. No pleated creamy smocks with cross stitched patterns across the breast. Just ordinary friendly real people. The couple running the bar was easygoing. The food is sensible simple tasty pub food. No surprises other than its consistency and value. This was a very good place to spend a couple of hours. Recommended. If you are not English or have spent your life in the tidy bland prissy world of a provincial housing estate then brave yourself for a harmless couture shock. If your life revolves around refilling the dishwasher rinse aid, Primrose rubber gloves and twice daily use of your cordless mini Dyson, then this place is not for you.

It's not out there with the Rod and Line but it is an entirely satisfying place to have several drinks and some accompanying food. Old style pub food, not flash or fine dining or even remotely approaching a gastro pub. Just wholesome hearty simple pub food. Real shabby, run down, untarted up interior. Get someone else to drive.
