“Great way to spend day”
Reviewed 10 June 2012

We spent a great day at Fountains Abbey and Studley. There is so much to see and the grounds deserve your full attention. Have a break at one of the tearooms before tackling some of the walks. It was so good we joined the NT.

“Romantic ruins set in an 18th century pleasure ground.”
Reviewed 10 June 2012

Fountains Abbey and Studley Gardens are set in the most beautiful part of North Yorkshire about 4 miles west of Ripon on the B6265. Stick the postcode HG4 3DY into your satnav and you will be taken to the front door. Run by the National Trust it costs £9 for adults and £5 for children - but for this you could spend a full day having a great time.

The Abbey goes back to the 12th century when Cistercian monks ruled the roost - Henry VIII changed things and the Abbey was plundered and left in ruin. The ruins are great to wander around with lots to see and clamber over.

In the 18th century the gardens were started with the ruins providing a perfect backdrop for much of it. There are ponds and canals , follies and statues and perfect vistas to impress you. Look out for the tunnel carved out to give victorian guests a fright - to get their hearts a flutter. The view from Anne Boleyn's spot is fab and the headless statue behind the shelter a little spooky.

There is plenty of room for children to run around - there is a playground with climbing frames .

The Visitor centre restaurant looks good and the lakeside tearoom has a fine selection of cake.

You can also visit the deer park and St Mary's Church a gothic creation set in the park.

It is a very popular spot and the carparks are busy - however there is so much space that you can wander about in peace for much of your visit.

“Awesome, the guided tour is not to be missed”
Reviewed 9 June 2012 via mobile

We managed to spend a whole day here the place is huge.

The history of the Abby was amazing but make sure you catch the free tour. I think they run hourly. We learn heaps more than just walking it on our own.

Fran our guide was great. The tour took just over an hour.

Theres also a tour of the water gardens but we didnt catch it.

The deer park was huge, but we managed to see a large group of deer about a 10 minute walk in.

“Well worth paying the National Trust Membership”
Reviewed 7 June 2012

If Fountains is the only place you visit, you can make the cost of membership well worth it if you go there again and again. Super tea shops; herds of beautiful deer; lovely walks of differing lengths; lots to learn and experience through the ages from monks to 1700 to modern times; and great events all year round - especially atmospheric at Christmas! We go twice a month and love the change of seasons.
