Owner description: Markenfield Hall – tucked privately away along a mile-long winding drive, just three miles south of Ripon, has been described as Yorkshire’s best-kept secret. Not visible from the road, a glimpse of the imposing east wall cannot be seen until visitors reach the old Mediaeval road near to the top of the drive. But for a quirk of fate – and the turnpike act of 1777 – Markenfield would be one of the most recognisable houses in Yorkshire and the nearby A61 would run along this now-Bridleway just 100m from its façade. As it is, the house is approached from the A61 Ripon to Harrogate Road along a humble farm track, past agricultural buildings and farm workers cottages. Parking at the side of the moat, visitors approach the building on foot – walking over the bridge that now serves the house in place of the former drawbridge – and the moment the Mediaeval Courtyard opens up as visitors pass beneath the Tudor Gatehouse never fails to astound. Open to the public for just 28 days each year - or to groups by appointment at virtually any other time - the Hall is still privately owned and in the hands of dedicated custodians.

“A little gem”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 June 2014

Only open in June. Was very busy when we arrived, but quietened down half way through the afternoon. Guides very helpful and friendly. There are toilets but no refreshments on site. The nearby garden centre does have a good bistro, but it stops serving at 4pm.

Fantastic visit to markenfield Hall just outside Ripon. Its a beautiful C14 fortified Manor house with an exeptional History going back to an entry in the Doomsday book. The guides in each room were welcoming and full of historic facts about its history.A much loved family home. The hall is also.licensed for civil marriage ceromonies.A lovely romantic place for an intimate wedding. The Hall.also.hosts lots of different events.I just loved this house.

“Lovely private house”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 June 2014 via mobile

We saw this on TA and noticed it was open - one of only 32 days of the year- so took the time to while away a couple of hours. The location is beautiful and the house very picturesque from the black swans, ducks and enormous fish swimming In the moat to the perfectly manicure grounds inside the grounds. The volunteers offered just the right amount of information and the visit well organised. This could be combined with other attractions in the area

“A wonderful moated house full of atmosphere”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 June 2014

As my review says this is a wonderful moated house full of atmosphere which takes you back into the mediaeval era. Good room stewards who really know their stuff. All in all well worth the entrance fee. While we were there Lady Diedre spent 20 minutes explaining a photo book about the upper floors that the visitor could not access. Well done them

“lovely visit”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 June 2014

A delightful well lived in house full of history. The setting of the house enclosed by its moat has an air of romance.Inside a good selection of rooms are available to view. Every room has a helpful volunteer guide. The house is only open for two short periods of the year. The present one up till 29th of June.I do recommend that you take the opportunity to visit. There is no tearoom but there are good facilities nearby in Ripon.
