Insightful and fun presentation on the history of Ripon and it's more than 1100 year old horn blower tradition. Friends and colleagues who are not from Ripon find the story at first unbelievable ("...it happens every night?...really?") and then amazing - it's adds a uniqueness to Ripon which most towns and even cities crave. If you're in town it's well worth spending half an hour listening to the Hornblower, before retiring for a drink in one of the towns friendly pubs.

I'm glad we stayed to see the Hornblower tell his story but it was a very cold night and maybe something that I'd have preferred to do on a warm summer night.

every evening at 9pm a hornblower blows his horn at each corner of the square at ripon, and then he tells you the interesting story of why they do it.

He arrived on the dot just before nine dressed in tricorn hat and frock coat, and as the cathedral clock chimed 9 he started and blew his horn at each corner of the monument in the city square. He then spoke for about 20 mins about the history of this wonderful piece of pageantry. It is nice to this tradition still being carried out in these days of cuts and economies. Well worth a visit.

George spent 20 minutes on a rainy January Friday evening telling my wife and daughter (the only tourists daft enough to brave the rain) all the history and superstition surrounding this 9pm daily tradition. They also asked him where was good to visit and eat and he was very warm, friendly and informative. Nice jovial character that is a credit to Yorkshire. He also gave them some lucky wooden pennies so we will be buying a Lottery ticket :)
