We had often passed by en route from York to Leyburn, but this was the first time we had called in. We were certainly glad that we had! Westwoods is easy to find (once you are in West Tanfield!), it is warm on a cold day and so is the welcome. There is an excellent range of teas/coffees/hot chocolate, food and snacks, of super quality and (always dear to a Yorkshireman's heart) at reasonable prices.
Don't be put off by the exterior - the tea room is bright and modern inside - and there is the added bonus that it is attached to a shop selling all kinds of lovely things for the home as well as good quality clothes!
Add to that the fact that there is good parking for several cars, and you have a real gem.
If you are anywhere in the area, it is well worth making the trip, as the village itself can boast a 14th C tower and a church which in parts dates back to Norman times, and there is even a prehistoric henge nearby.
