“A fantastic New Years Eve”
Reviewed 3 January 2014

From the warm welcome to our eventual departure in the early hours of the morning, the staff were both friendly and attentive.
The chef created a most imaginative and mouthwatering menu. The food was exquisite and we enjoyed every mouthful.
The warm ambiance of the Old Deanery is unique and welcoming- a rare treat in a hotel.
This is not our first visit and we will be back.

“Fantastic Festive Fayre!”
Reviewed 6 December 2013

We've just had our company Christmas bash at the Old Deanery. Food, service and ambiance were all fantastic. We had the garden room to ourselves, which made it intimate; but had reception and nightcap drinks in front of the roaring fire in the bar. Perfect. Value for money was outstanding. Will definitely be booking again for next year...

“The Old Deanery Ripon”
Reviewed 23 September 2013

We had planned to celebrate our 32nd wedding anniversary with lunch at The Old Deanery. However, we were not anticipating the welcome(lack of!) we received. The chef had decided not to appear that day. I notice from other reviews that this is not the first time this has happened. It certainly is the last time we will visit this hotel, with such an attitude to its customers-despite their website,in its reference to lunch, not bothering to mention that its very much hit and miss! We will miss! Go to Chimes instead on Kirkgate instead. They will give you a lovely welcome

“Visited on an off day!”
Reviewed 4 September 2013

We went for an afternoon tea, due to the reputation of the Old Deanery. The tea was very nice, but apart from the cakes, was nothing to write home about. The service was slow, and even though we booked a Prosecco offer (which was confirmed the day before) they didn't seem to know anything about it.

You can see what a lovely building it must have been as a deanery, very modern furniture though, which jars a bit. It was difficult to explain, but I didn't feel that we wanted to stay and it wasn't relaxing as the radio was on full blast. It is difficult to appreciate the atmosphere of a place when you have the traffic news in your ear.

I would give it another chance though, obviously they had an off day!

Please come again. There are all kinds of reasons why your experience was not as you should have expected and the whole team on the day is very sorry. Please contact me on linda@theolddeanery.co.uk and we can discuss it. Thanks, Linda

“Whats happened?”
Reviewed 8 August 2013

We went for lunch at The old Deanery mid week having been numerous times before. The table was booked for 130PM for which we did arrive early and placed a drinks order. The weather was fab so we asked to be seated in the garden. No problem. We waited or nearly 20 minutes for our drinks to arrive! and then ordered our food. We both ordered the Cauliflower soup to be followed by breast of chicken on creamed potatoes. The food took an age to come and the soup was bland and uninteresting. No salt or pepper was on the table so the soup stayed under seasoned. The mains came after again an age, in fact some 40 minutes! The reason for this was unexplained as there were only four couples eating in the whole place. The creamed potatoes were boiled potatoes chopped in two with cream poured over them! When challenged the chef gave the reply "well that what is says on the menu!" . A pity the chef is trying to rewrite the rule book back to front. The wine was overpriced garbage at £20.per bottle. The only positive from the whole experience was when we left! Oh and the sun!. Very disappointing and weather we will return is to be debated.

I welcome feedback from my customers both good and bad so that I can improve the Deanery experience for everybody. To be honest, anything less than "fantastic" is a disappointment to us all. Your experience seems to have fallen far short of that and I am very sorry. [The potatoes were crushed and dressed with a shallot, garlic, white wine reduction, finished with cream and chives, not creamed potato as stated in the menu - apologies from the chef for the oversight.]

However, our regular or even semi-regular customers, who ask for me by name on arrival, as you did, always make me aware of any problems in person, by phone or email - far better, I think, than haranguing a charming, hardworking and willing waitress in front of other guests. Linda W
