Stayed four nights, as we were moving into a house in Ripon, and needed to get some work done before we moved in.
Husband booked us in, as he had read the good reviews - I was a little apprehensive. Needn't have been - Clean, nicely appointed room, very good staff, food plain and good (can recommend the eggs Benedict) and very reasonable.
I think its the nearest you'll get to a coaching inn nowadays - buzzing, cheerful, occasionally 'lively', but catering very well for a wide clientele.
Parking isn't ideal, but not bad, the nearby Sainsbury car park seems to be safe and secure.
We had the room at the top of the stairs, next to the ladies cloakroom, (as I am a little disabled and there is no lift) - the 'whooshing' noise referred to by an earlier reviewer is the sound of the Dyson hand dryers - I mentioned this to the manager and he promised to move them onto another wall. If you are booking room 103, be sure to ask if he has!
We'd certainly recommend a stay

Room Tip: Second floor should guarantee a really quiet night.

Stayed at The Unicorn for one night on a short break in North Yorkshire. Our room was spacious, the bathroom adequate but it was on the 3rd floor and there's no lift. (something for those who struggle with stairs to consider when booking, request lower floors). The Hotel is part of a Wetherspoons Pub so expect a degree of noise late into the evening. There's no parking at the Hotel.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the front will be noisier as that's where the smokers are directed after 10pm. If s...

Only stayed one night - in a very lovely double room with an extra bed for our little boy. We arrived on a Friday evening, and the pub downstairs was very busy and noisy.

We got the keys for our room and were really surprised how lovely and quiet it was upstairs despite the buzz and hype downstairs. We bought some drinks to take upstairs and some nibbles. Settled down to watch tv and get the small person to sleep !

When everyone left downstairs - it was a little noisy as we were right over the front door... but not majorly so and only for a very brief amount of time.

I booked online and got a really good deal. Breakfast was not included, but VERY good value downstairs in the morning. Husband had a cooked breakfast and little one had scrambled egg on toast.

Parking was in a public car park down a big flight of steps and out of sight (little car park was full). Saying that, my car was ok and still there in the morning !

Stayed just the one night en route home from Edinburgh. Booked by phone and the booking staff matched online discount prices. As with other Wetherspoons chain houses the room was tidy, well furnished, very clean and quirky as the hotel is an old Georgian building. Directions given were easy to follow and, despite the vagaries of the Ripon one way system, the hotel was easily found. Dining rooms was exceptionally busy both in the evening and the next day - no surprise really when you looked at the prices charged by local restaurants. Parking by the hotel is very limited, only about 6 places. However, the Sainsbury's long stay at the rear of the hotel was only £2-50 for all day 0800 to 1800. Also, if you over feed the meter on arrival it carries over into the next day - very handy. Given that the hotel is on the market place and is also a pub there was little noise disturbance.

Room Tip: All rooms are up stairs that are a bit on the steep side and for modern human dimensions the baniste...

Stayed for just one night, arrived with a speedy check in. Our twin bed room was on the first floor and was a spacious room, which looked like it had recently been renovated. Lovely big bathroom with bath/shower facilities, and everything was spotless clean. The only downside was very few parking facilities, so had to park on a public car park near to the hotel. For the discounted price that we paid (which was because we were a large party) £72 per room, the value was excellent. This hotel is right in the middle of Ripon, no breakfast is included but you can purchase breakfast in the pub area for a minimal cost. Would recommend if you want a no frills break away.

Room Tip: We stayed in room 114, lovely big end corridor room.

Stayed with a group of friends. Rooms were decorated very well, ensuite was lovely. Plenty of tea/coffee/milk. Hair dryer etc. for affordable very clean comfy accommodation, couldn't ask for more. We were on first floor & at back of building. Some of our group were disturbed during night by other guests but nothing major. Staff/checking very welcoming. Breakfasting pub in morning, cheap & good. Would recommend & stay again. Car park limited but car park nearby not expensive (£2.10) for overnight.

My wife and booked two night stay here not expecting a great deal as it's over the top of a large pub,(weatherspoone) But got a pleasant surprise, the rooms although spread out up up lots of of stairs were really great, very well decorated and plush furniture and bedding. The reception was also very modern an although it with really friendly staff. Super value for money, would recommend it to anyone, who doesn't mind stairs and a little street noise.
