if you like a unified architectural style, you'll love this place! Aside from the actual buildings on the site, the museum gives you an insight into the creative genius of Ledoux, the architect, who was 200 or so years ahead of his time. Surprisingly, many of his thoughts foreshadow the pavilions at the 1938 NYC World's Fair.

The grand architecture of the royal saltworks highlight the importance of salt in an age before freezers were common place.
As with many historical sites in France the external building work has been lovingly restored to display the grand architecture and grand ideal in which the place was built. However, behind the facade little of historical importance remains.
It's worth a visit, but to say that it is a "must see" would be misleading.

a world heritage site inspired by a visionary archtect with a social dream. The amazing thing is this is about the extraction of salt, a nowadays cheap product that was driving the wealth and tax system of a whole country (France) for centuries. I take firnds and family there every time I have an opportunity. Just splendid.

We were a group of English tour operators on a fact finding mission. Our tour guide was full of very interesting facts. No stone unturned. Very well preserved buildings, clear explanations. A real treat. Vaux le détour!

Historical place and industrial site where salt was manufactured from brine in the 18 and 19th century. The site was restored. Guided tours are organised at specific hours.
Please count a little more than half a day to visit all sites and museums.
