We had ten nights at this wonderful small hotel in Grenada. This was only our third trip to the Carribean, and we always try to find peaceful places to stay as an escape from the pressures of modern life. This very well run small hotel provided us with everything we required: a spacious first floor suite with a good sized bathroom, with whirlpool bath and separate shower, french windows to a lounge area, and further french windows opened onto a large balcony, with two sun loungers and a generous sized table with comfortable chairs for breakfast, which is served on the balcony (Superior suite, 'Anthurium'); excellent food in both the main restaurant and the Bash beachside bar; wonderfully colourful and well-maintained gardens; friendly and efficient staff; and a very good swimming pool.
The restaurant was very good for various reasons: there was a fixed a la carte menu with choices, but each day there were additional, and different, Chef's choices, for each of three courses; local produce, both in the form of local fish (sometimes we saw them caught on the beach in front of the hotel) and local vegetables, served up in a variety of ways. The chocolate and banana dessert, with chocolate sauce and chocolate ice-cream (local chocolate made on the the island 'from tree to bar'), was excellent - as was the home-made nutmeg or mango yoghurt which was on the breakfast menu.
Breakfast was pre-ordered each morning (selecting the preferred breakfast time, and items chosen, on a printed slip) for the following day, and a wide selection of dishes was offered. We had the generous-sized fruit platter each morning, which was beautifully presented.
Each evening it was possible to have pre-ordered drinks (another small order slip) and freshly chef-made canapés brought to one's room. When we tasted the first round of canapés we knew that the restaurant food would be good!
The Bash bar was open for informal midday beachside meals - tapas, as well as main course meals, and there was a lunch-time barbecue/grill on Sundays. The Bash bar was also the venue for the Wednesday evening hour-long social gathering, hosted by the managers and hotel owners (it is a family owned and run business), who take a keen interest in making sure that guests are as happy as possible.
The beach is not large, but is beautifully clean, and there were plenty of comfortable sun loungers - and shady trees - if one needed to retreat from the sun for a while!
After we arrived at the hotel we decided that we would hire a car for a week to give us flexibility to tour the island. Although it is quite easy to arrange for trips out to visit various sites of interest, we rather like exploring, and Grenada has much wonderful scenery to enjoy. One word of caution - the roads are not so well signposted as in the UK, but on the other hand, we had no difficulty in finding friendly locals to point us in the right direction (even if it was back a mile or two down the way we had come!). We visited the nutmeg processing plant - not hi-tech; the Belmont Chocolate Estate (tour worth doing); St George's for the Saturday market - spices everywhere; Annandale falls and garden, and the Grand Etang in the nature reserve. To see ripening nutmegs, cocoa trees, and bananas, growing by the roadside was a fascinating experience. One disappointment was that the Bay Gardens, which are shown on the official tourist map, did not appear to be open at all this spring.
