Four plates of fish and chips and four pints. Relaxing atmosphere. What more could you want. Looking forward to trying something else off the menu.

Pub was friendly with good beer but limited choice of wine. Seating was bit limited and I had to sit by the pub telly (landlady switched it off on request). The food was fine, better than 'pub grub' but not very special. Service was friendly and efficient. If you would like a decent pub meal in an unpretentious atmosphere than the Wheatsheaf fills the bill. Pricing was fair no complaints.

We visited on a whim as another establishment a few miles away which we usually frequent wasn't able to take card payments - and are glad we decided to do so.

It looks like a traditional pub which is a big plus - not pretentious, and a welcoming atmosphere. We were welcomed in by the staff and ushered to a free table while a high chair was brought out for our one year-old to sit in. A proper high chair too, not one of those little wooden ones without a tray table you often get in this sort of place so "his lordship" was as happy as Larry.

The food was great too - excellent quality and reasonably priced. I had a lovely homemade burger smothered in blue cheese while my wife had a roast beef dinner, proper roast beef too none of that thin sliced pre-cooked nonsense.

The evening menu looked great too with a nice assortment of steaks etc.

We really liked it and will definitely be back.

I visited The Wheatsheaf last night (20 February) with two friends and was blown away by the menu and food.

The pub is very traditional, serving lots of locals, a roaring fire welcomes you, and very friendly staff too. Don't be put off by its traditional look, as the food is top restaurant quality, the Chef should be very proud of his dishes, all were amazing.

The special menu was in fact special, serving wood pigeon and fish tapas, and the every day menu, was extensive, inexpensive and had some interesting combinations.

The gentleman behind the bar bent over backwards to make us feel welcome, and his customer service skills were so natural we felt like we had known the man for years, not just a first meeting.

When the food arrived, it had been served to look like a picture on your plate, and it tasted divine.

My only pointer would be, to give out cocktail sticks with the olives. We got a portion of olives to share between all of us, and did struggle a bit as we didn't have cocktails sticks (we didn't ask neither, so they may just have been an oversight).

If you are passing Wetheral, or in fact just want a fantastic meal it is worth popping through to Wetheral.

I went with a party of friends, but the children's menu looked fabulous too, so if you have children it may be worth stopping off for tea one night.

Definitely worth a visit, top food, quaint pub and excellent service.
