“Great Pub for Character, atmosphere and Food”
Reviewed 30 October 2012

On a recent trip to the Peak District we called in by chance to the Red Lion at Litton, and are very glad we did. We ended up having dinner there that evening and lunch the next day, and would have gone back again that evening had we not been moving on to another area. This is a really cosy pub with real fires, lots of little nooks and crannies, and a good selection of relatively local beers (not always the case in some pubs in the area). The best thing however, is the food. There is a decent sized menu for lunch and dinner, as well as daily specials. The food is straightforward and unpretentious, but at the same time imaginatively presented and very competently cooked. It's also nice that you can pop in for something in mid-late afternoon as they serve all day from noon.

I'm planning another trip in January, and will be staying somewhere close by so that I get as many opportunities as possible to go back!

“Very well run Village Pub”
Reviewed 29 October 2012

Having visited quite a few "authentic" village pubs with prominent "Muddy Boots and dogs welcome" signs during our walking weekend in The Peak District, The Red Lion stood out as the best by far.

Firstly, and vital for four discerning beer drinkers, the beer was kept in absolutely perfect condition. We sampled three of the ales on offer and every one was tip top including the legendary Barnsley Bitter and Absolution from a brewery in Sheffielde.
Food was excellent and although we only had sandwiches and chips, we could all tell that quality, presentation and good local ingredients were important here.
Varied mix of clientele too with whippet owning locals, walkers & couples- unpretentious and genuine. Great too see four or five original smallish rooms rather than the ubiquitous open plan favoured by many "refurbished" pubs.
My only issue would be if I had children under six who were not allowed into the pub. I couldn't help but feel for the family who had to stay outside and be content with the picnic tables- great in the summer but on a chilly and windy October day? No doubt a policy based on bad experiences with unruly offspring?

“Excellant food.”
Reviewed 22 October 2012

We visited this pub last year and had a lovely lunch, so after finding ourselves in the village again we decided to stop for lunch again. We got there at 12.15 and found it quite busy which is amazing for a village pub in the middle of Derbyshire. Lot's of people ordering food so we placed our order, a starter and then two main courses. After a little wait the main courses arrived and so did the starter !. we said the Brie was meant as a starter and the waitress apologized, the Chief then appeared and again apologized and offered to make us a fresh Brie starter after our main course if we so wished. We had our Steak which was very nice and our Steak and Kidney pie, which was fantastic with excellent homemade chips and plenty of veg. At the end of that course we asked if we could change our "starter" to two portions of bread and butter pudding which they promptly did, again absolutely delicious. The new owner again apologized and explained they have only been running the pub for three months. The service was good, the food was excellent and the fact that the chief came out of the kitchen to say they were sorry about the mix up was a testament to the fact they are trying and succeeding to give good service and value for money. I would definatly recommend this pub and would suggest the homemade steak and kidney pie, the steak just melts and the pastry is first class.

“No comparison to last year”
Reviewed 17 October 2012

After enjoying a couple of previous visits last year, went this evening and found a different experience. I had sausage, mash, onion and "moth" gravy. Granted the young waitress was very sorry and said the chef was sorry too when she replaced the meal "very quickly". But when I paid up, no apology from the licencee or even offer of a free coffee to take the taste away felt like they didn't care.

“New regime, no worries”
Reviewed 16 October 2012

Approached with a little trepidation as this was my first visit since the pub changed hands. No need to have worried; food, beer and welcome all remain excellent.
