Chris & Gill's place is short drive from Kemare, so the location is great for exploring the town and the nearby gorgeous peninsulas. But make no mistake, this place is also a destination. The drive down the lane may take a small amount of bravery, but it will take your breath away (and Chris, the dear man, will guide you every step of the way).
It's obvious that much love has gone into the big and small details of this place. The bathroom is spacious with a heated towel rack (luxury! ), and the window facing the main house is a stained glass window, allowing for light, privacy, and the celebration of art. The kitchen has every appliance and utensil needed, is spacious, and has a washing machine (hello extended stay!). The living room is both cozy and manly, with leather furniture and a stove for building fires. There is also a tv (the morning news and weather) and book shelves stocked with wonderfully diverse authors. The sliding glass doors allow for a view to the mountains, trees, the giant hare hopping through the yard, and the inviting walking paths that this lovely couple has created.
But my favorite part is climbing up the spiral staircase and entering the bedroom sanctuary. Once again, it's apparent that much thought and love went into the creation of this space. It beckons you to bare your soul, to find peace. Our first night there I made a cup of tea, carried it upstairs, snuggled down into a beanbag, and watched the full moon play hide and seek with the clouds. In the morning I took my tea upstairs and watched the bats flit about.
Chris and Gill are also fabulous musicians. If you have the chance, go see them play. The music is so sweet you will just have to close your eyes and let go. These hosts radiate kindness and joy. Our best AirBnb experience so far (and that is high praise to be sure). Book yourself an extra day if possible so you can enjoy the place and people even more. :)
Stop looking and stay here! Seriously, you won't find a better place in Kenmare, I promise. The pictures don't do it justice. The views are so beautiful my husband and I used the back garden as the backdrop for our first look photos during our Irish elopement. Chris and Gill are so kind and caring and made some great suggestions for where to eat and what to see. And if they invite you to watch them play in town, GO! Hearing them play was one of our very favorite parts of our whole trip. I could keep going on and on about how beautiful and perfect the house was and how even our wedding coordinator, who is from there, was blown away, but that would mean more time you'd waste before booking, so go and do that. Now. I promise you will not be disappointed.
I can't quite describe how truly amazing this place was. The first thing we said to Chris when we arrived is that the pictures do not do it justice! Please take better pictures, this place is so incredible it will blow your mind. Driving up here I was a little nervous as to where we were going. We were able to locate the GPS coordinates so it made it easy to pull into the driveway but not without some fun mountain driving.. when we pulled in, Chris was so wonderful and kind. He gave us the tour of this BRAND NEW place with an amazing POWERFUL shower and great scenery. There are sheep and mountains everywhere. You can literally hear nothing but nature from up here. He asked if he could make us a fire while we were getting dinner, after giving us recommendations on where to go. Hospitality this amazing only exists in Ireland! When we got back the place was warm and cozy with the fire blazing. He told us about their (his and his wifes) band that play at a local bar called Caseys- and that they would save us a table the next night. We drove the ring of Kerry that day and it took us awhile to get back but we ended up at the pub about 8:30. They were TERRIFIC! It was like a true Irish experience. He recommended getting the pork burger and it was so incredible that we went back for lunch the next day. We actually got a flat tire.. imagine that.. driving through Kenmare and he was all too happy to assist. I might be coming off like this guy is the best thing ever but I can honestly say I cried driving away because of how incredible everything was. ' The location is literally brand new. The shower is the most powerful and best we have ever taken. The sheep call through the windows at night and their are sky lights open to the stars. I am a city girl so this was paradise for me and my husband. I would recommend this to anyone. I wish when we came back in 2018 that we would be able to stay here again but it won't be enough room for 4 :( Chris and Gill- Again you were wonderful, thank you for the hospitality and the memories!
We loved everything about our stay in this unique and secluded accommodation. Chris and Gill are the most amenable hosts. The environment is superb - you have spectacular views of rocky Irish hills from every strategically placed picture window. The bedroom/retreat mezzanine is simply beautiful. You can lie in a bean bag and stare up through the skylight to the stars and hear nothing but the occasional bleat of a sheep. The cabin was well equipped for self catering and comfort. A lot of thought has been invested here. The book collection is extensive and there is ample heating. The bed is comfortable and the water pressure in the shower is blissful. Chris and Gill are talented musicians and it was a great treat to hear them play in a local restaurant. The slightly hair raising drive up to the cabin is all part of the adventure! Thank you, Chris and Gill!
