Not everyone has the patience and tirelessness to run a B&B. I'd probably last about 15 minutes. Therese, the fine proprietor of O'Shea's Farmhouse, was seemingly born with a gift for making people feel welcomed and taken care of in a genuine, unfussy way. "Not a bother" and "no problem" pass her lips a thousand times a day, and she really seems to mean what she says -- even when she's just taken it upon herself to wash, dry and clean about 8 pair of your family's rain- and mud-soaked shoes and boots.

We spent four nights at O'Shea's and had a great time exploring the Kenmare/Killarney area, even with some pretty relentless rain. An added bonus for our kids was the opportunity to head up the hill to the family's 50-head dairy farm to help with the milking. (Therese's husband, John, tends to the cows).

The rooms are clean, bright and pleasant -- not huge or luxurious, but just what you'd expect and hope for from a reasonably priced B&B. They have five guest rooms, I think, and most were occupied while we were there. I expected there to be some noise as other guests closed and opened doors, walked down hallways and so forth, but it was remarkably quiet during our stay. Guests have access to a cozy living room/sitting area and take breakfast in a separate dining area. We enjoyed meeting the other guests during breakfast. The morning meal choices included the "full Irish" (eggs, ham, sausage, black pudding..), delicious, house-made scones, Irish bread, and crepes. Therese's more than generous portions often kept us going pretty much until dinnertime.

The house itself is well built and pleasant, but not what you'd call charming or atmospheric -- it is a normal family house, expanded to serve as a B&B.

It is worth noting that O'Shea's is a healthy walk from Kenmare, about 1.5 miles, along a busy road. Driving to town is easy, though, and there was always parking to be found.

A big "thank you" to Therese for all her hard work in making our family feel so welcome.

We showed up in the late afternoon and where greeted by the sweetest woman, Therese. She had just baked a cheesecake and she offered us a slice with tea...that is hard to beat! It is out of the town a bit but right as you exit the Beautiful National Park, in fact the beauty is right behind the house. The rooms where big and clean. The breakfast was made to order, Therese really aims to please.

Mrs O'Shea is a fantastic host. Couldn't do enough for group of lads down to hike in the beautiful Reeks. I will be back in the not to distance future and will book Mrs O'Shea's as my place to stay.

We enjoyed excellent hospitality here. It is a very homely B&B - the service was excellent and very friendly. The home baking was particularly appreciated. Highly recommended.
