A well-equipped and well-loved cottage perched at the edge of an unbelievably stunning remote setting. Although dodging the tour busses on the Ring of Kerry provides too many thrills, once one crosses the little stone bridge leading to Rossmore Island, sanity and solitude return. Seal Rock Cottage, owned by Jane and Mike Madigan, is thoroughly and thoughtfully equipped and spotlessly maintained. A fantastic collection of books and board games tempts one to remain inside, but we had great weather and had to get outdoors. The rewards were Irish hares poking about the lawn, seals sunning on the rocks at low tide, five curious steers munching on the grass next door, and the fabulous silence looking out across the Kinmare River to the Atlantic. No planes overhead. No boat traffic other than the fisherman checking his lines once a day. Just the wind rustling through the tall grasses down the path by the picnic table. Open peat fires in the evening to take off the chill. Great walking nearby -- or if you are willing to risk the narrow roads and wide tour busses, fabulous hikes in various spots in spectacular County Kerry.

We were looking for an intimate self-catering cottage for several nights from which to explore the southwest coast, and found it at Seal Rock. The Owners have proudly furnished Seal Rock as a very nice vacation house, with all the amenities anyone could ask for. The view of the water each morning was a treat. The drive into Kenmare is about 15 minutes, so you can stock-up and cook at home, or go into town for dinner. THis is a great place to say if you want to spend a few days "living" in Ireland, not just visiting the way most tourists do. It's rural and secluded, but comfortable, and scenic.
