We stayed at the Coachmans Townhouse on out first night of an eight day mini-tour of Ireland. The place was exactly as we expected based upon Coachmans’ website and the many Tripadvisor reviews, except perhaps for our superior double room, which, while spacious, clean, and comfortable, was more utilitarian than luxurious. Nevertheless, a respectable room over an Irish pub was exactly the atmosphere that we were looking for to start our holiday. The pub downstairs was very nice and lively and obviously popular with the locals, but on the Wednesday evening that we there, the staff was all business and we did not experience the friendly banter that we enjoyed at other pubs in the days ahead.
Kenmare has a growing and well-deserved reputation as a “foodie" destination, and the hotel restaurant was surprisingly satisfying in a town that has an abundance of really good places to eat. Indeed, when we took a stroll around the town square area during prime dining hours, nearly every restaurant, from pubs to fine dining, appeared crowded if not at capacity, and we were turned away at two places before settling back where we started at the Coachmans. We’re glad we did. Whether planning to eat at the Coachmans or someplace else, reservations are recommended for the prime dining hours.
Other reviewers have reported a shortage of parking near the hotel, and while I can see how that could be a problem, we landed a space right outside the front door, with the caveat that we would have to be up and out early the next morning to avoid a ticket.
The bottom-line is that the Coachmans shines as a well-run, reasonably-priced boutique hotel with a lively pub and pleasing restaurant, located near the town square, within walking distance to everything in Kenmare, County Kerry. I would stay there again.
