“Far away from every day life in a beautiful cottage”
Reviewed 19 September 2013 for a stay in September 2013

We stayed in the An Bothan Cottage in early September 2013. The weather was beautiful most of the time and we enjoyerd very much to stay in the cottage. The cottage is clean, spacious and well furnished. In the evenings we loved to sit near the fire reading or playing cards. Elaine provided us with a lot of useful information, indeed there are many things around to be explored. Our children loved to touch the stingrays in the Ocean World Aquarium, to see the baby seals being fed in the Seal Sanctuary and to watch the dolphin "Funghi" near the port of Dingle. It is worth to climb on Saint Brendan mountain from where you have a beautiful view over the peninsula. Our favourite place for tea and scones was a small café near Slea Head - with a terrific panorama over the coast. There are wonderful beaches nearby, the temperature of the sea was around 15 degrees - so don't forget your wet suit! We had a great time in An Bothan, far away from every day life and felt very relaxed when we returned home.

I found An Bothán after a long search for a suitable place to take my father for a 70th birthday trip. This turned out to be a great choice; we received a very warm welcome with a bottle of vino! What a great place to stay - there is so much on the doorstep to do if you like walking, cycling, sea-life, bird-watching, history, etc - and the house itself was charming with great views over towards the Three Sisters and Smerwick Harbour.

The house was surprisingly spacious, with a very high roof. It was warm and plenty of ventilation if required. Beds were clean and very comfortable, kitchen was well appointed, (luxurious) bath was just the trick after walks over the surrounding hills, cliffs and beaches.

Originally we were set to drive out to Killarney and do the whole Ring of Kerry thing, but the local area - Muirioch/Ballydavid/Slea Head/Brandon Bay etc was irresistibly peaceful and interesting, so much so that we stayed put for the whole week, with the odd day drive to local landmarks. The drive over Connor Pass, and the drive around Slea Head being notably memorable. Dingle is literally 15 -20 mins drive away with a wealth of pubs and eateries. Visiting Fungi the dolphin for the first time in Dingle Harbour was indescribably wonderful.

I'll return one day, hopefully sooner than later. An Bothán was a step back in time to a slower pace, with nature at the doorstep.

PS Big thank-you to Jennifer for the loan of the shovel, we dug plenty of bait even though ultimately proved to be luckless/awful fishermen.

Thanks Elaine for a wonderful holiday, 'til next time.

D

From the moment we arrived to the moment we left, everything was perfect (knowing that we can't control the weather of course but even that was above par for at least a few days!!!). Great welcome from the owner, Elaine, with lots of information/ recommendations on the local Dingle scene; the cottage itself is in a perfect location, truly only a few minutes from the beach; the cottage was charming and cute - and everything you could possibly need was there, very easy to just relax and chill out.
Great places to eat nearby - O Gorman's restuarant was excellent, and recommend you go for a beer in one of the 2 local pubs of BallyDavid. The location is really quiet, and uncommercial, just a general local charm to the immediate surroundings - not crowded with tourists. And we were able listen to the irish language being spoken in the pubs naturally - fantastic but ashamed to say i didn't understand a word though :(

If you are into cycling the cottage is a perfect launch point to get on the Slea head route, as well as some local trips to other beautiful beaches - definitely go to Beal Ban, a most beautiful beach near Ballyferriter, only a 15 minute cycle tops from the cottage (not well sign posted, we struggled to find it.............hint - look out for Smerwick Harbour signs before reaching Ballyferriter). And in the surrounding area lots to do, head to Dingle - if you are into outdoor activities, 2 musts - sea kaying and rock climbing with http://www.irishadventures.net/.
We stayed for a week - I wish it had been 2. Would we go back there? Absolutely yes, already planning on a trip next year !!
Have fun - we did !!!
