Interesting site to learn more about the area. The person working in the gift shop was a wealth of information, not only of the Oratory, but the area and Ring of Kerry as well. Wear comfortable walking shoes to walk the grounds.

This is not a hi tech site. It has a nice visitor center and cafe and then you walk up about 150 yards to the site. It is amazing to stand inside and reflect on a community of people huddling into this little building and listening to the Word of God over a thousand years ago. Scenery is beautiful.

Unless you have studied the structure in advance, it's best seen with a guide who can point out the site's uniqueness, its age, history and remarkable construction.

My wife and I just spent 3 weeks in Ireland. We have been there many times, but never did visit this site. We did and are very glad. First of all the site is very well taken care of and very interesting to visit. The center has a short introductory film that sets the stage. Informative film briefly setting the historical scene. If you are just the type to count off the number of sites you visit, skip the film. But if you are truly interested in feeling part of the history, the film adds to the experience. The oratory is just a short little walk from the center. Don't forget your camera, it is well worth taking several photos of the oratory and cemetery just next to it. But the best thing of our visit was the very friendly host at the visitor center. He helped us learn about this site and he directed us to another nearby historical site that we would have never found. Not only did he send us to this site, he took time to have a friendly conversation with us about the Irish, other scenic areas, and current events situations in Ireland. It was a wonderful place to visit, made only better by the kind gentleman hosting the center. If you visit the Dingle peninsula, do not miss visiting this place. We purchased an "OPW HERITAGE CARD" at the first OPW site we visited (Donegal Castle) it cost us 32 euros for 2 seniors (would be 42 euros for 2 adults) , and visited many of the OPW sites. If we hadn't bought the card, the admissions for our trip would have been 74 euros. Quite a savings. see their site at www.heritageireland.ie not all sites in Ireland are OPW but most of the great ones are. A great deal if you plan to visit. You can get their brochure at any site and look up the sites you would visit and just figure out if it would save you. saved us 42 euros ($60). Gallarus was free to all, but many sites charge 4-7.4 euros per adults.

Gallarus Oratory is, on the one hand, a simple stone structure. On the other hand, it's a very intersting insight into what people in the area were capable of building and what they thought important to build over 1100 years ago. That it is still standing after all that time is nothing less than amazing. That you must take the beautiful Dingle Peninsula loop drive to travel to the Oratory is a very nice side benefit.
