“Gallarus Visitor Centre a Must! ”
Reviewed 4 June 2014 via mobile

We stopped here while driving the slea head drive and were really surprised by the excellent visitor centre which was staffed by a really nice gentleman. It had a cafe, gift shop, toilet facilities and auditorium. We had no idea of the significance of this historic monument but after watching the a 7 minute video in a lovely auditorium we well informed. My advice is definitely go to visitor centre 1st, it's well worth it and excellent value for money!

I visited the oratory a few days ago, and wish I hadn't bothered to stop there. The oratory is mildly interesting, it sits on public property it's free of charge to visit, and the government has provided visitors with free parking. The problem is that a nasty man who owns property near the oratory has decided to take advantage of tourists by making his own parking lot just before the free one, and charging admission.

When I went there, I parked in the free lot, and happened to encounter the owner of the pay parking lot. He was very rude to me and had the nerve to accuse me of sneaking in the back way.

If you're considering visiting the oratory, don't pay to park in the first lot you see. Continue down the road a little and take the first left. You'll see a FREE parking lot on the left. It's closer to the oratory and the path is lined with beautiful fushia bushes. The pay lot is farther away and you miss out of the fushias. If some awful man accuses you of sneaking in, tell him to take a hike, it's public property!

“Worth the Stop”
Reviewed 30 May 2014

My first recommendation is to take a day to bike around the Peninsula, you absolutely will not regret it. In the alternative, it makes for a beautiful drive as well. Either way, be sure to stop at the Gallarus Oratory. I would suggest an hour, to be leisurely. The Oratory was fascinating and the grounds were beautiful. The best though was the man working at the Oratory--he knew so much about the grounds, the town, the Peninsula, and Ireland... he suggested short cuts, additional stops, and even warned us away from some of the local "tourist traps" with recommendations for alternatives. Talking with him was such a treat, that alone was worth the stop.

“A marvel of engineering”
Reviewed 29 May 2014

The Galarus Oratory is a religious shrine but also a testament to incredible engineering. With no mortar, the ancients built an edifice of stacked stones that is symmetrical, aesthetically pleasing, and completely waterproof. You have to see it to really appreciate it. It is humbling to compare our modern buildings that last a few years and crumble to this simple, yet enduring building.
