“Lovely Mount Falcon!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 July 2014 via mobile

Myself and my partner stayed for two nights at the end of June. We really enjoyed our stay. The room was clean with a big comfy bed and was overlooking the adjacent woodland so it was really quiet.

We had dinner in the restaurant on the second night and it was absolutely faultless. Very tasty and good sized portions.

We both had a massage which we really enjoyed. The pool and jacuzzi were clean and again looking out onto the woodland. All of the staff we encountered were pleasant and more than willing to help.

Only downside is that the hotel is maybe a bit pricier than most of the others we have stayed in. But then again we dont mind paying a bit extra if the hotel lives up to expectations!!

Now please don't look away even though I am going to give you two dull facts before I tell you how good the Mount Falcon hotel is.

County Mayo is on the north west of the country and covers 2,57 square miles, making it the third largest County in the Republic of Ireland. And having given you that bit of nerdy information I am willing to take a bet with you that you will not find a better hotel anywhere in the county because, quite simply, Mount Falcon is terrific.

Set in 100 acres the reception, bar and dining area is set in a grand old country house which also offers some luxurious suites and an extremely well equipped spa. Our group were down in the lodges some 100 yards away from the main building, all well fitted out and spotlessly clean, three-bed accommodation overlooking a limpid lake full of brown trout.

We were there to play golf and three of the finest courses you will find anywhere are all within an hour's drive. We played at Enniscrone, Sligo and Carne returning each evening to our base looking forward to some fine service, delicious Guinness- why does it only ever taste so creamily wonderful in Ireland? and friendly, helpful staff who helped make our stay even more enjoyable.

We had one morning to spare and joined the specialist falconers who work for the hotel and walked with them through the woods with their two Harris Hawks, Arizona and Nevada. We all had a chance to fly these fine birds and have them come swooping around the mature woodland trees before slapping onto our falconers' glove which contained a small piece of chicken treat for them. If you enjoy hunting and fishing, Mount Falcon is the perfect venue.

Although we did not have time to get into it the spa is really slick and, given the pints of Guinness and fine cooked breakfasts I was enjoying might have made a small dent into my calorific intake. But perhaps I shall go there next time. Mount Falcon is far too good a place to only visit once.

Room Tip: If you are on a golfing tour and want to have a single room make sure that you specifically request...

What a terrific time and value. For the price of a Marriott room in the states, Mount Falcon offers tremendous indulgence. Large, comfortable rooms with stellar grounds and arguably the best food in Ireland. There was good birding on the grounds and some good sized trout in the pond out front. We did not sample the spa or other offerings because we were here for the Salmon Fishing.
Fishing at Mount Falcon
-The Ghillie price seems excessive at first, but there is little hope without a man that knows the river(and the river is not as productive as years past)
-We had John and he helped us land 5 salmon in two days, plus another two we lost
-Stuart, the man in charge of the fisheries, is very busy and has a laser-sharp, dry wit that can be misinterpreted, but he's funny as hell. No matter how seasoned an angler you are I would advise listening to his recommendations. eg. I wanted to fish the Mount Falcon section of the Moy and I wanted to try Fly fishing. I was sent to an entirely different section of the river and had to fish with worms! And thank God I did, we were the only ones that pulled in fish that day and mighty ones they were. Whatever Stuart and the Ghillies tell you is years of experience on this time of year, this height of the river and who is catching where.
-I guess times have changed regarding eating your fresh caught Salmon. We could not find a restaurant in all of Ballina that would cook it up for us. So each night we ate at Mount Falcon with awesome meals, but ample cost.
-great laundry service, you will be hard pressed to find a coin operated laundry business so take advantage of this pick up and drop off service
-The staff went above and beyond with service
-The pub is wonderful, with great views and ambience

The hotel, the staff, the food was excellent ! They went out of their way to make your stay a memorable experience. And don't miss the Hawk Walk an adventure you won't forget. Sorry to leave but a place I would return to on my next trip to Ireland.

Room Tip: Pick one of the suites. It's a real treat!

Plus a lot to do here. We had the nicest room and bathroom here of the 5 resorts and hotels, all rated 4 star or better, on our stay in IE and NI. This place has charm. We did the falcon (or hawk) walk, but more time would have allowed for fishing and skeet shooting. The indoor pool and spa facilities are excellent, the bar is cozy and the staff superb. It may be a bit hard to find on your GPS as there is no street number...it is in a forested area about 5 km east of Ballina.

Room Tip: We had a standard (deluxe) room in the castle itself. There are even nicer suites available, but for...

We brought some guests from Australia for a drink and returned to eat after they fell for the castle and the lovely views. the bar was very nice and friendly staff made us welcome. The restaurant was very comfortable. The food was superb and loved my dessert.

Difficult to describe in words the feeling one gets when you first sight the magnificent building but it is a feeling which stays forever etched in ones memory. The interior of the building is simple awesome and the spacious bed rooms are superb with the restaurant providing excellent meals. If we were to ever revisit Ireland it would be a definite place we would visit again.
