“Beautiful Hotel, but let down by their food.”
Reviewed 4 August 2014

Stayed here for 1 night (midweek) as part of a holiday around the west of Ireland. We booked a package including dinner and breakfast as we wanted to be able to relax in the hotel without having to drive out for dinner etc. We also booked an activity (clay pidgin shooting) for the day of departure, so our total bill, including the shooting, wine and 2 after dinner drinks came to aprox €400 - not a bad take for any hotel on a Wednesday night!
Positives: We stayed in the beautiful Wall Pool Suite which was unexpected and excellent. Upon booking I had asked for our shooting to coincide with check out time, however they were unable to take us until 1pm, so I asked for a late check out so we could relax until it was time to go shooting, any they allowed us until 12.30 which I felt was nice.
We also did a walk of the grounds after breakfast which was lovely, as the estate is beautiful and well maintained.
I also found the staff to be friendly and non-pretentious (which can sometimes be a real problem in places like this!) and are a credit to the hotel.
Negatives:
Dinner was really far from spectacular. Apparently it normally goes for €59 per person for food alone, and if dinner was not part of the package I would have had great difficulty with this pricing. Everything looked really beautiful but the taste was severely lacking. I suspect that the kitchen spends so long decorating the plates with flowers and other finishing touches, that the food suffers. I had the monkfish/john dorey main course and both pieces of fish were tough and overcooked (or as if they'd been left sitting on a hot plate for some time). Well cooked fish should simply flake apart but this had the consistency of rubber. My bf had the pork starter (cold and tasteless) and the duck main (skin not crispy and overall lack of flavour). All dishes were great to look at but just didn't deliver on taste.
My other minor gripe would be the leisure centre but admittedly, this might be my own problem. I found that there were a LOT of children with very little supervision (none from the hotel) and as a result there were kids using the jacuzzi, sauna and steam room with was against the policies written on the walls and off putting for adults trying to relax. Now admittedly, as someone who doesn't have children, I have very little patience for stuff like this, but it wouldn't inspire me to come here again, because there are plenty of spa hotels where children are not allowed, and it makes a huge difference. Perhaps if children were only allowed pool access until a certain time this could be a suitable compromise?
In short, its a beautiful hotel, but a bit too family friendly for my taste. Also, the kitchen does not live up to the hype and I would think that changes need to be made there as it does not live up to its fine dining pretence.

Room Tip: The Wall Pool Suite is beautiful - a real sense of opulence.

We booked late and got one of the last bedroom, they called it The Luxe and was located at the front of the building just above the reception and the bar. You can imagine how an old building is sound proof..so not great rest. It's pity as the place is really stunning and the restaurant is very very good. Probably one of best food we had in years
We enjoyed it and will go back but will make sure that our room is far from the common area.

I have just spent 5 nights with family at lakeside lodge. The accommodation is very good with 3 queen size beds ideal for our family of 4 children. The television was very small and there was no mobile or wifi signal in the lodge. A Plus for some but I needed mobile access for work. The food in the restaurant whlist very good is not family orientated and is expensive.
Mount Falcon is located between Foxford and Ballina. The main tourist spots like Westport, Achill Island, Ceidie Fields, Etc are a drive away away. For €1300 for 5 nights I thought it was overpriced given its location. It is nice but you dont come away feeling you have got value for your money. Few other negatives my wife tried book spa treatment no-one called back as promised and upon checking out had someone else bar tab added to my bill. Underwhelmed sums it up.

We have just stayed in a lakeside lodge for a few days. The lodge was first class. It couldn't be faulted. However my son, a keen angler, was disappointed with the fishing at the lake. Basically, the trout are being fed lumps of bread by children. This means the trout are gathered at the lake edge and could be lifted out by hand! There is no sport there. The restaurant at the hotel needs to change. It's "fine dining" french cuisine. We ate there last year and didn't feel like eating there again. It's just not worth the money. They do not seem to cater for children at all, yet the lodges are full of families! The swimming pool is good and the family used it daily. The grounds are spectacular. All in all, a wonderful place to chill out.

Beautiful hotel. My husband is in a wheelchair so we requested an accessible room. We had room no. 22 which was fantastic - a huge comfortable bed, two bathrooms, one fully accessible with seated shower and plenty of room to turn the chair, also the mirror was just the right height for shaving which it isn't in most hotels. The staff were very helpful and moved the beer tasting session from the cellar to a room on the ground floor so that he could take part. The grounds had tarred paths which were easy to negotiate and because we had good weather we were able to sit out on the front terrace looking over the immaculate grounds. We ate in the restaurant one night and the food couldn't be faulted. Breakfast had a good selection from full Irish, kippers, eggs Benedict, to fresh fruit, croissants, cheese, yogurt etc.
Also plenty to do during the day although the falconry was fully booked so you should probably book in advance but they also had fishing, driving range, bike hire, wine and beer tasting not to mention the pool and spa.
All in all a great place to stay either with or without a wheelchair!

Room Tip: For an accessible room get no. 22.

This hotel is a great place to stay if you are staying for a few days and want the amenities (spa, fishing, falconry, etc.). Rooms are beautiful and quite large. Dining area had good ambience but felt dinner was quite overpriced for quality of food and attention to service. If we were going to the area we would give them another try, though.

Firstly we have stayed here every year since it opened its lodges and had been very satisfied. This year was a complete disaster. We stayed in a Lakeside lodge and were surrounded by an extended family who were in adjacent lodges - they were rowdy until the early hours. They had all gathered for a BBQ in common space just outside our back window, with no thought for anyone else.

Secondly, there was a very rowdy wedding party. We usually time our arrival mid-week and go for a meal in the hotel and avoid the hotel at weekend as it is usually taken over by a wedding party. This year it was a big wedding and they were also staying in neighbouring lodges. They were noisy on the Friday night until the early hours.

When we went to the hotel for breakfast on Saturday they were screaming in the restaurant! Still drunk from previous night.

On the Saturday evening we had the BBQ in full swing outside our window from 7pm until just before midnight. We rang the night porter who came and got them to quieten down.

Just as the BBQ party went quiet the wedding party arrived shouting and singing at 1am, more at 3am and several times between 5.00am and 7am. The most disturbing was at 3am when were where waken by a woman shouting "don't hit him" followed by a very audible blow. Then silence. Tried ringing the hotel but no reply! We didn't get back to sleep after this.

We had no sleep from 7 in the evening until 7 in morning and the violence was particularly upsetting. I raised this with the duty manager who apologised and seemed sincere. When we came to check out we were given a small amount of the bill. Not really compensation for two sleepless nights on what was supposed to be a quiet family holiday.
