“Nice location”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 May 2014

We recently stayed here mid week on a Living Social deal. Great Northern is classed as a 4 star hotel. Reception staff very helpful and pleasant. Room contained double and a single bed. Could have accommodated King Size bed as in other hotels of this standing. Decor was very dated "60/70's". Door Key attached to large fob - why not card access as elsewhere. TV had 8 channels but no guide. No menus in guest info, no safe or fridge in room. Leisure Centre had pool, steam room, sauna & Jacuzzi. Steam Room had broken seat. Another guest said it had been broken for many years. Sauna electrically controlled - we had to wait for heat to rise after closing door - could not add water. Beauty/Spa treatments only available in sister hotel - not this one. Lift to 1st floor very slow, quicker to walk. No Wifi in bedrooms. Cigarette bin outside front door full of butts and not emptied while we were there. Had dinner and breakfast which were very good. Location excellent overlooking sea & Bundoran. Staff excellent but Hotel could do with good revamp and attention to detail to warrant 4 Star rating. Good value under Living Social deal - not sure about paying normal prices. Sligo nearby with more modern Hotels.

Room Tip: Rooms with sea view worth obtaining but dated.

Hotel was OK. Staff were very friendly, but there was a shortage of bar staff and too many restaurant staff. Food OK. Rooms large, airy and clean, but in need of some updating. Reception area very comfortable. Very good golf course, which could be played for 20 euro per person if a hotel resident. Town of Bundoran awful, but surrounding area and beaches lovely.

We stayed at this hotel for 4 nights, can't fault a thing, rooms big & comfortable, staff very friendly & helpful, meals lovely, all set in beautiful surroundings on a golf course & near the sea, would definitely recommend a stay here.

Stayed at hotel for 2 night break with grab one and enjoyed ourselves so much we stayed on for 2 extra nights. Lovely reception staff especially Sarah and huge family room for 1 year old to run around in. Will definitely recommend this hotel to our friends.

Another pleasant visit to hotel. Rooms recently painted and much better. Food very good and served by most pleasant staff. Had one little hiccup but but deftly and effectively dealt with by Restaurant manager. Ambience still very relaxed. Wine in restaurant too expensive. Should consider special offers as happens in pther McEniff hotels. One big problem - expecting guests to enter and exit main entrance through at times a haze of blue tobacco smoke. This is not acceptable in the present day and only detracts from an otherwise lovely experience. As previously advised - a room on 1st floor overlooking Atlantic good.

Before I was let submit this review, TripAdvisor asked me if I had been to the Great Northern since my most recent review. The answer is, yes. I was down from the 8th to 13th May 2014. I am a regular customer of the Great Northern Hotel but I have no vested interest whatsoever in posting any kind of biased or inaccurate review. Put it this way: I'm a regular customer because it's a place I love going to. Once again I had a terrific time, for five nights. Most important is the friendliness and kindness of the staff. This has always been my consistent experience of staying at "the Northern" and they didn't disappoint me this time either. I also recommend very strongly the breakfast because it's a whopper - they cook your hot breakfast for you from scratch (that is, it's not all grilled rashers kept under red lights for 45 minutes etc. like in other places) and they will cook it for you whatever way you ask.

Dinner was excellent as well.

I particularly appreciated being invited by Shauna McEniff to participate in the abs exercise class on Monday evening after my having done over an hour in the gym that day ... ! I could still feel the effects of the workout on Friday evening back home in Dublin.
The hotel has very good gym facilities and offers an interesting range of classes for members of the gym, locals and hotel residents.

Good value, very relaxed atmosphere between the customers and with the staff, smashing breakfast, great evening meal. I always enjoy staying at the Great Northern.

I recommend checking out the beautiful scenery around Bundoran and south Donegal - it's a beautiful part of Ireland, really.

Room Tip: Rooms in the old building are quieter.

Stayed with a group of family/friends in May 2014. Some rooms had been refurbished and ours which was a disabled friendly room (40) was so dated, I couldn't just say it was tired - i was abosolutely exhausted!
Staff were friendly enough, food was ok, bar service was amazingly SLOW, location was fab (on the beach) but unless there were dramatic changes I wouldnt rush to return.
Sorry :-(
