“Great location with loads to do!”

The location really makes this camping trip. The lake is there for boating and swimming (warmer than expected). Forest trails provide ideal venue for walks or cycles. History buffs can take in Castle island with anchient celtic history and ruins of Rockingham Estate. Small playground at campsite and outside visitor centre and larger paid acess one inside visitor centre. Adrenaline junkies can try zip wire courses (expensive but could provide 5 hours entertainment).

Campsite has toilets, showers (charged), laundry (charged), washing and cooking facilties. Depending on what pitch you are in, the toilets can be far away. WARNING - there does not appear to be a policy on late night noise so depending on who you have camping around you festivities can run into the wee hours.

As a group of 27 from toddlers to grandparents, we visited last weekend. 13 did the zip it rope park which was excellent - a great challenge and everyone loved it. After initiation where you are shown what to do, there are 5 levels of increasing complexity and height above ground. Everyone wears a harness and with double clips that you can't unhook simultaneously, its extremely safe. There are lots of staff and the place is very well run. The 9 younger kids went to the play ground, called animal kingdom and they loved it. There are other activities and it would be very easy to spend the whole day there. Other options are walks, boat hire, boda borg challenge, tree top walk etc etc. we spent 5 hours in the rope park and still didn't get to the last level. Its also very reasonable at 27e each with a 10% discount if there are more than 10 participating. There is also free parking if you spend 20 e or more in the lough key park (not including zip it) or 4e is needed on exit.

We stayed in the Lough Key Caravan & Camping Park in the Forest Park during the June Bank Holiday weekend.

On arrival, the site was quite busy but still lots of good spots available. We checked in at Reception and were met by a very pleasant guy who was able to help us with our queries. There is also a security guard who patrols the site at night & mans the reception area.

I was a bit aprehensive when I booked this campsite as a number of previous reviewers mentioned that the toilets were in poor condition. I have to say, even though it was a busy weekend, we found the toilets to be ok. At times, between cleaning, you were likely to find toilet paper on the ground but that was it. The facilities were clean and did not have any unpleasant odours. The showers were nice & warm & 5 minutes was plenty of time too.

There is a small playground on site with a larger one up at the visitors centre. We got a discount for a day pass for the kids and got our money's worth out of it. We did the tree canopy walk which was very well put together and takes you through a self guided tour that takes about an hour.

One thing this site would benefit from is a small shop on site for basics. If you need anything, you need to get in your car & drive. Although the ice-cream van visited each evening around 9.30 and cleaned up in terms of business!!!

I would definitely go back to Lough Key & look forward to my next visit.

Visited the park on June bank holiday weekend. The forest and park are beautiful, but the management of the facilities leaves a bit to be desired.

We arrived into a very overcrowded carpark. People were parked on double yellow lines, on grass, on pavements, on corners, and all over the place. They charge for access, and this should buy some supervision, which it clearly didn't. Some cars were obviously blocked in.

We tried to use the lavatories. A huge pile of vomit and a toilet blocked with turds but me off a little.

We were staying on a boat and had lots of fun. I was very surprised to find the modern new jetty didn't seem to have the facilities for the hygienic discharge of sewerage from boats, and the water supply was labelled as being unfit for human consumption. Perhaps I'm mistakenly, but I though boat tourism was an important contributor to the local economy. Why they can't provide the most basic of facilities eludes my understanding.

We went for a walk through the forest and loved it. The bluebells and wild garlic were gorgeous. The paths were well tended but poorly signposted. I saw various expensive looking maps which were meaningless and unintelligible to me. I had difficulty finding my way around, and ended up getting a bit lost. All ended well, and I found my way hope eventually, but no thanks to the signs.

The park is beautiful but understaffed and lacking in some basic amenities.

Visited zipit on st Patrick's weekend after the parade in carrick on Shannon and it is really good. Great staff and a great healthy outdoors activity. There are lovely walks through the forest paths also. We'll be back in June.

I visited Lough Key Forest Park primarily to go to Zip It but had a walk around the lovely grounds, I'm sure it would be a great place to take kids as there's a large playground, plenty of space to run around and ducks on the lake waiting to be fed!

We spent 3 hours in Zip it and it was the best fun i've had in a long time. It's quite a challenging course and I wouldn't advise it if you are afraid of heights. There are several different courses you can do and they cater for all abilities. I was aching all over the next day so be warned its quite a workout. I would recommend it as a great activity for families with older kids. I'll definitely pay a return visit!

Aug 10th 2012 - Just returned from first family (2ad & 4 girls 4-9 ) camping trip to Lough Key (Erris camping area €22pn). Were warned on booking that ground condition were soft due to rain which was fair enough.Upon arrival greeted by chirpy attendant who pointed out best available place in Erris to pitch. In agreement with other reviewers about the cleaniness of the toilet block - Cleaning sheet would appear to be signed more often than toilets cleaned! Security man did ro am around but we were lucky as no rowdies in our earshot.

We stayed for two nights and used the middle day to use the park paid activities. We took the family package of Adventure Kingdom, Boda Borg and Lough Key Experience for family at €50,discounted from €60 as were campers. Only worth it at that price though. The Adventure Kingdom @ €5 per child is steep considering it is a mere playground with no out of the ordinary features. It was well marshalled on our day there with only bracelet holders allowed access. Unsupervised children not allowed in or out. Parental seating could be increased given the supervision rule!

The on site cafe provides good food (check their facebook page for dets) but the children's selections are pricey. (Plain chicken wrap €5, but includes free Ribena!). Staff were completely overwhelmed on the day we used it with a 15 min Q to order and a futher 30min wait for food. (Gift shop sells take away teas & coffees for €1.50). Cafe does not serve breakfast! Cafe toilets had an unpleasant smell too!

There is no shop onsite for bread, milk of basic stuff so come prepared. A local shop advertisess twice daily deliveries but we didn't avail of or witness. Don't get excited about a trip into Boyle, although the Supervalu is large and woould appear the best place for supplies.

All in all a good trip. The only reason that I didn't award 2* is probably because the weather was 25 degrees, Katie Taylor won and everybody was in good form. This place needs dry weather for the enjoyment to be fulfilled.

We didn't avail of the water stuff like boat trips, fishing which are available on the Lake. Think it costs €10 per adult and €5 per child on the hour long lake tour but not sure.
