I recently went to Ireland for a wedding and stayed prior & after at the Portmarnock hotel which
is in an absolutely fabulous location. The staff were more than helpful, the rooms very spacious and the food very good, although there could have been a more varied menu.
Especially a great place if you're a golfer.

We have just returned from the Portmarnock hotel north of Dublin. The hotel which has been recently and very tastefully refurbished is beautiful and most welcoming from the moment you enter the bright, airy and opulent foyer. The reception staff were most pleasant and we stayed in a room with seaview. Everything contributed to a most enjoyable stay - the meals, the location and we were particularly blessed with beautiful weather. We would not hesitate to recommend the hotel to anyone who wants to stay in one of the most beautiful parts of Ireland in a premier quality hotel. A special word of thanks must go to Kerli in reservations for arranging our accommodation.

Room Tip: I think it would be impossible to find an unpleasant room in the whole hotel.

First of all I have to say that Rachel at the front desk was outstanding. She was very, very helpful. The rooms were clean and comfortable for the most part and discrepancies were taken care of as soon as we mentioned them. Service was quick. We appreciated outlets that were placed where they were accessible. Some hotels we had stayed at only provided an outlet underneath or behind a nightstand. Here there were 2 outlets right on the counter in the bedroom, next to a mirror. Hallelujah! Although the lighting was very poor in the bathroom, they did provide a wall mounted mirror with an articulating arm, which was nice.

The hotel itself is a bit off the beaten path. If you want to play golf or walk along a rocky beach then you're all set. Not much else nearby. The bus into Dublin stops right in front though.

I can guess that rooms on the higher floors might have views, but from the bottom floor (below the lobby) you see nothing but a narrow strip of grass and some overgrown bushes. Not very appealing.

The piano next to the lobby may be fun for some, but for the guests trying to sleep the noise carries all the way down the hallway.

Breakfast was ok. Much better once we realized that we could order eggs cooked fresh the way we wanted them. The ones offered on the buffet were runny, undercooked scrambled eggs.

The hotel has a couple of different venues for dining. We tried only one of them and had such a bad experience there that we made sure we ate before we returned to the hotel the next two days. The service was hands-down the worst that we've ever experienced. The food was passable – just OK – and so NOT worth the wait. We had to get up and walk over to the bar to request some water, and again had to go over to the bar to request the check after waiting an unreasonable amount of time trying to get someone's attention. Three of the four of us ordered something cold (sandwiches and an appetizer) and the one hot meal was baked fish. It took over 45 minutes to get that food and there were only two other tables occupied when we sat down. Dessert took so long that two of us left. I spent 8 years working in a restaurant when I was young and I know poor service when I'm getting it. When our waitress finally reappeared we jokingly said that we'd almost forgotten what she looked like and she said that she had taken her break. Apparently they don't have anyone else assume someone's duties when they go on break. Even when she wasn't on her break, our waitress did not once check to see if everything was OK or to ask if we needed anything.

I feel I have to consider the food service when rating the hotel because of the location. We saw few other options for dinner nearby. This is a part of the hotel so management is responsible for it as well, and it certainly affected our experience here.

Room Tip: No views on the ground floor. Piano can be heard easily on the second floor. I would recommend a h...

We have stayed at this lovely hotel twice now. Both were Groupon or Living Social offers and we would go back again. My husband just loves the golf course! We were lucky to have good weather on both occasions and a lovely walk on the beach is he icing on the cake. Rooms are very well presented comfortable and clean. Staff are very helpful, friendly to the point of remembering you had stayed before! Entertainment in the Jameson Bar very good. Its a remarkable place and you really feel like you have had a good break.

Room Tip: We stayed on 1st and 2nd floors and never had any bother with noise.

(1) on June 13th vomit on food trays were on the 3rd floor. Has not been removed for hours
(2) the same night drunken guys were hitting at doors at about 0400 am and again before 0630 am having Whiskey with them
(3) massive noise over hours
(4) the so called management explained the condition the hotel has been in with "being busy". HSE got informed over the sanitary condition
(5) Saturday, 8th of June the area in front of Jameson bar has been very similar to a refugee camp (plates even on the floor, massive noise all along the night, tables on the parking, chanting guys as well)
(6) GM refused to explain himself over the incidents and hired bruisers instead of that to get rid of a long term guest
(7) case is with authorities
(8) credit card has been used without permission and without any specification of the amount, without providing an invoice
