“As good as ever”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 April 2014

I've just come back from my annual visit to the Friars Lodge in the beautiful town of Kinsale. I'm pleased to report that the Friars Lodge is as it always was: terrific! All the rooms are large with comfy beds and good en-suite bathrooms or shower rooms. Hair dryer, iron with ironing board, choice of pillow and tea / coffee making facilities are in each room as standard. The friendly staff and quality of the breakfast are what keep me coming back, year after year.
The Friars Lodge is just two or three minutes walk away from the centre of town which makes it quiet yet convenient. If you are eating in town, don't miss Max's on Main Street. A good tip is to eat early (before 7.30 pm) as many restaurants offer an early bird menu offering great value for money. You will find a good selection of local menus in the reception areas at the Friars Lodge and the reception staff will be happy to book you a table if you would like them to. They will also book you a tee time at one of the local golf courses if that's you thing.
I've read some recent reviews commenting on the "missing reception staff" on check-in. Well, I know this happens occasionally when they are really quiet but the guests failed to mention that they were given a phone number to contact 24/7 if they needed anything. If you feel strongly about this, just let the owner know when you are likely to arrive.
All in all, I would highly recommend this friendly establishment. I will certainly be returning as soon as I can.

Room Tip: Rooms at the front have good outlook over the town below. If you definitely want a bath as opposed t...

We were fortunate to stay at the Friar's Lodge in Kinsale for three nights. We were traveling with our 13 year old grandson and booked a Family Room which had a queen and a single bed. The room was tastefully decorated, very large with a sitting area containing three comfy wing chairs. The location made walking to the village center very easy and the bonus was their off-street parking. Wi-Fi was available in the dining room which was sufficient for us. We found the staff very friendly and accommodating. We will definitely stay there again.

Stayed there with my family, extremely nice people brilliant breakfast with brilliant choice of fish freshly caught. Very underrated in a good spot with lots of activities in town for you on your own or for friends and family.

We recently just stayed at the Friars Lodge for one night. One night too many in the end. We stayed here as my parents stayed here 7 years ago and loved the service and location, clearly service has gone downhill since then. When we arrived at 5pm (reasonable time considering the traveling we were doing), there was NO ONE THERE. Literally lights off and our keys left with a note outside the door saying enjoy your stay. The innkeeper or staff did not even await our arrival. Upon entering there was no heat on in the hallways and the reception doors were locked. We found our rooms in the deserted lodge on our own. We quickly got out of the hotel to check out the town which is a must just don't stay at Friars. When we returned that evening still NO ONE WAS THERE. No staff in sight, no other guests. In the morning two staff members who did not even greet us were in the dining room serving us. They did not apologize and were clearly just there to serve breakfast and go on about their day. We were finally graced with the innkeeper's presence after breakfast. She did not apologize for not being there when we checked in but was sure to make sure our rooms were fully paid for. This is not the level of service I expected and certainly not what my parents expected upon their return to a lodge they loved 7 years ago. If there was an explanation or an apology for the lack of service that I would have understood but nothing.
Beds were decent
Rooms were clean
Bathrooms were noisy
Hallways were freezing
Wifi was terrible

All my Family really enjoyed our stay, but my 10,12 and 13 were disappointed that the Wi-Fi did not reach the 2nd floor,I didn't mind!As a very light sleeper I was woken several times by noisy plumbing,my family slept through it.But a delicious breakfast made up for it.We would visit again.

Kinsale is great, and the location of this B&B is fabulous.
The rooms are large, and fine, but nothing special. We were there during a difficult weather period... there were power outages and trouble getting a hot shower. Maureen was kind to help us find a room at a local place that did have a hot shower!
The hospitality of the kitchen staff and Maureen is unparalleled.
