We stayed two nights in May and enjoyed every minute in Clifden. The Hotel is just fine and deserves its high ratings. Breakfast is quite good and there's a grocery store just across the road.
We happened upon a horse sale when we arrived and walked out to have a gander, stopping on our way at the little museum. The next day we trekked along the harbor road and out to the castle (don't bother with that place), and then went to the western edge of Ireland on the Sky Road. Back in town we checked out the churches and the shops and then had a great night at Lowry's Pub where the music was simply outstanding. Most of the pubs in Clifden have music and you don't want to miss that experience.
We arrived and departed by bus and got along fine without a car. One small improvement that we could recommend for the whole of Ireland is more laundromats.
