“Strange ---- very strange !”

I'm not quite sure about this Hotel and that's probably because i'm from Dublin and not from the USA. I don't fall for the usual diddely idol 'tosh' that some tourists do. Anyway, the family run 'castle' is a peculiar place. From the moment you arrive you are greeted with a smile which appears to be genuine but then again i'm not sure. However the staff are well trained and nothing seems to be a problem. My daughter said ' hey dad, this place is like an old folks home' and she was probably right as I am getting old and sometimes forget this !!! Most revellers were in their 50's - 90's and the second floors had a smell to match. Can't quite put my finger on it but I suppose it was either sewage problems or rot.
I would rate the food at about 4 out of 5 - don't have the cheese and cauliflower soup - a bit like baby food.- yuck
The bedrooms and old but OK and the price should reflect this if you are staying here.
Sleep quality is good and the walls are breeze block so sound doesn't travel !
The building is not in good nick and needs an overhaul. The personal touch from the owners makes the hotel what it is - a very friendly, warm and nice place.

Enjoy your stay - I still can't put my finger on whether i'll be back or not Strange --- very strange

Room Tip: get down early for Breakfast as it gets busy and the breakfast is great

"The Connemara Trail" (horseriding) loves to stay in this beautiful family runned hotel. Accommodation, food, stuff ... perfect. Best hotel we've ever used in the last 44 years !!! Brian and Paul are fantastic hosts and of course Gilbert, the parrot. Clifden without the Abbeyglen ? Not possible !!

Stayed here for three nights after Easter on specials deal.Great deal for 3 nights B&B and 3 evening meals We also got a further reduction as all our party were over 55s.The food and service were first class with complimentary champagne before dinner in the evenings.Top quality enterainment in the bar each night. If your a fan of trad music you will love the music on the Tue night session.Nothing is a problem for Brian and his excellent staff Just ask!!He even managed to get a wheel chair for one of our party at short notice Well done Brian. Only little negative was buffet breakfast could get a little cold with serving dishes being continually opened. We will return and soon

We stayed in this hotel, on a 2 nights special Easter package. We have stayed in hotels (4-5 stars typically) all over the world..... BUT this place rates among the best of the best.
Beginning with; the welcome was fantastic, then after we saw the great rooms, we were invited for afternoon tea with scones, followed by the formal welcome by Brian (the owner) with Champagne freely flowing and appetizers.
Then with our package, dinner was included (it was enough food to feed an army), plenty of choice and the service was really friendly.
Brian was really hospitable, walking from table to table chatting with his guests.
Rooms are large, clean, and really Irish style, as befits a Castle.

Room Tip: We had to rooms and both were great.

We use to stay in the Abbeyglen at least once a year but due to weddings abroad and other events we did not get back there for almost 5 years and we had forgotten what a great place it was to stay. The owners and staff couldn't have been nicer, very friendly and helpful. A special mention to Ann in the Bar who served us complimentary Afternoon tea each day, she very dedicated and a great member of staff to have. Before dinner each evening we got complimentary champagne which was a lovely start to our excellent dinner on each evening. The only downside/change to our stay was the breakfast, while the breakfast was good, it may be a personal thing to us but we don't like buffet breakfasts, please go back to served breakfasts it is so much nicer.
Our room was on the ground floor, very large and confortable with a gas fire - fab.
The castle is an ideal place to stay if you want to visit connemara and Brian gives a good talk in the bar each evening before dinner about the history of the castle and Clifden and hands out very useful maps.

what a pleasure to see such a friendly and professional staff...the owner, the manager and Roger the bar maestro...you feel almost quickly like if you were at home. bedrooms are big and very old irish style with a great fire work for the superior rooms. the menu for dinner changes every day and is fresh and simple.lastly, the location is great as you can navigate through the connemmara from the hotel

Room Tip: ask for the superior room at the second floor...you will have a great sea view

A 2 minute walk from Clifden, this hotel is a great spot to stay. Four poster beds and gas fires in rooms make it romantic and cosy, ideal for a short break. Breakfast is pretty basic but waiting staff were attentive and friendly. No wifi in rooms but good signal in the lobby. Beware of parrot! Will return.
