Unlike other reviewers of this property, we did not find value at the Abbeyglen Castle Hotel. We paid way too much for a room that had dusty crevices, a toilet tank top that did not fit the size/shape toilet tank, and a toilet paper (TP) holder was not secured tightly to the wall. Each time TP was torn off the roll it tipped and almost fell off; also it was a double roll holder (one roll of TP on each side of a post) that was installed so close to the sink that it had to be tipped to replace a roll of toilet paper; maybe that was why it was not secured to the wall tightly. Don't be deceived by the pictures on the internet!! Our small, dingy room could not be compared to any shown on the hotel's Internet site; unfortunately that is all we had to go on when selecting a place from across the Atlantic Ocean. Their dinner and breakfast foods were tasty; no complaints there, but the owner/manager's demeanor was very flippant at best and while he "apologizes" for his behavior in writing on his menu and business card; we found his demeanor to be very unprofessional. The Abbeyglen obviously has "followers" in Ireland, but this place did not meet our expectations for a "castle" stay. I feel deceived and see no evidence to support the 4.5 star rating given to the Abbeyglen Castle Hotel.

What a great welcome! Afternoon tea of scones, jam and tea. Champagne and a history of the Castle and surrounding areas at 6.30pm - all complimentary. The rooms are elegantly furnished, the staff are super friendly and it is just a fabulous place to stay.

I know that title sounds a little over the top, but bear with me. This isn't about this hotel being the fanciest, or the newest, or the poshest. It is about the overall experience being wonderful, warm, human, and delightful.

Our host – Brian – is in exactly the right job. He's warm, funny, witty, and charmed everyone in our party: including the kids. We got to poke around the heliport, talk to a parrot, walk through the woods, visit a beach, and enjoy drinks on a terrace.

Our rooms were so large that we actually only used one of them! We were sizing our space based on how much space we'd need based on other places we've stayed around Ireland, and these rooms were twice that size.

The overall property isn't perfect – it is a hundred years old – but it has a wonderful feel of a place that's loved and is taken care of year after year.

We'll be back when we have more time!

Room Tip: splurge for a big room

The Abbeyglen Castle offers great food that is well prepared and beautifully served. Incredible table service. Personable and welcoming host who made sure that everyone had a wonderful dining experience. Bar with music downstairs for before or after dinner drinks and conversation.
